Remove the drive from the enclosure and test it. Maybe only the enclosure is damaged. But try to return it first.

Good advice.

If it was dropped from a height, it is more likely to be the whole drive that has died, but it is worth a shot.

yeah take it out and see. I have had 3 at work that *died* opened them up and tested the drive as being fine. Put it all back together and its been fine since. The connectors are a little silly on them and sometimes come loose.

Some awesome magnets lurk inside there too, they are useful.

Use the HDD as a hockey puck. See how many times you have to throw it off of a 4 story building before it cracks open.

Hmmm, I have a pile of old 20Mb and 40Mb drives and have just found my Torx driver set Time to have some fun. I used to carry HDD magnets around with me all the time, pop them on top of a friends TV (CRT) and whatch the fun or better yet if you can, slip it into the coin pocket or inside a friends wallet, and wait for them to try use their CC a day or so later

Those platter's look like they could make really nice desk clocks. Just get the mechanism and the numbers to stick on.
