What to do with high latency?

Telkom has already logged me on their system as a "not easy to work with" customer, I need a complaints service for customer complaints, and a complaints service for them :D fl!ppet ek is nou gatvol vir telkom, baai ouens.

I have cooled down and would like to apoligize to my new telkom friends for my rudeness and unchristian behaviour. Sorry guys, at least you made me smile today, I still don't like telkom and I think if I get enough energy I'll try and sort the problem out with telkom again.

Thanks for trying to help GangStarr and photonman,

btw. photonman, you're cute aswell "wink *wink

LOL!

High latency woes....

Ok i see this thread got completely out of hand...

Terraside tbh i dont think you have clearly explained this phenomenon you experience.

I am not calling you an idiot... yet... :D

But do you experience - slow browsing / p2p ?? :D / FTP - while dld'in at 50Kb+ or with your upload capacity maxed / nearing max ???

Because if you are complaining about latency - and your bandwidth is maxed out... you really shouldnt be complaining cause your an idiot.

There is only so much data that can go through a line at once:

Download <--- incoming:
Once this reaches capacity (512 in your case) it starts to build a queue of data on the ISP's side.

Upload ---> outgoing:
Once this reaches capacity (384? i think in your case) it also starts to build queue - this time on your local machine.

Latency normally starts to slip when this happens.
Normally when upload bandwidth becomes saturated, this happens because your machines ACK packets (the packets that tell the other machines sending data to hurry up and send already) get caught up this queue.

So what i would suggest is - check what is going on / running on your network - you are running business DSL - do you run a mail server internally - anyone use p2p - know of any large uploads that are happening ??? daily ? SMTP servers could be to blame.

how many machines plug into the router ? start by unpluggins them one by one...

Alternatively you have a really cruddy router???

I also highly reccomend getting a demo version of CfosSpeed
[ http://www.cfos.de/index2_e.htm ] this solved my latency woes - it's been truly fantastic for me.

sorta takes the shaping control away from telkom temporarily. and it really works.

sorry if this sounded rude to begin - i hope it helps though!

- plenty

Hey .geek don't be nasty, I've helped you before, booohooo !!! I did aplogize.

Thanks for cFos plenty, I'm not an idiot, I'm not downloading then browsing, browsing always sucks.

Hey (whisper in photonman's ear) hey, what's on your nose? Is that my booger? Did I forget it with you last night? see you later tonight baby.
