What to do with Ipad 1st Gen?

Howdy gents,

I've got an Ipad 1st gen 32gb wifi/3g that has been collecting dust for the last few years. It's battery is still good but it's close to useless as it does not support the latest ios so can't do much with the istore. What should I do with the thing? I'd sell it but I don't think I'd get much, I'd give it to the little one but without apps its not much use to him either. Any practical suggestions on what to do with this relic of the past other than giving it away?
 
We use ours as a Plex / movie viewer for the little guy. Have a 64gb, that thing is bullet proof. Survived friggin sandpits :)

So you're using it to stream from a pc? I considered something like that but I'd rather load a bunch of movies on it and let him go wild. Is this possible with uhmm, acquired films?

@oober I came across those things when I initially googled but none of them are particularly useful for me.

Ahh you see we have reached a level of tech junk overflow in our home so 1st gen ipads are now photo frames or paper weights. We do stream all our movies and such via plex. But on a newer generation of tablets.

It is pretty sweet, to be honest. It was bundled with a group of apps that I picked up for a sweet deal a while back, wasn't something I would've bought alone. Since I've started using it, must say - proved to be very useful, since I can plug the kids' iPads up to the Mac Mini before a long trip, and 10 minutes later, they're good to go...

That said, not sure about the Free option, since I never used it. So no idea what the catch would be - adverts(?), bugging you to update, limited to x number of transfers?? But I guess give it a bash, worst case - simply trash it if it starts acting up. Softorino are a legit company, FWIW, so not likely it will install anything funny (I should think)...

I use it as an external/portable monitor for my Mac - software called splashtop wired xdisplay

That's actually a good idea! I use Duet Display to occasionally connect my current iPad - it's made by former Apple engineers, and with it being connected via Lightning, there is virtually zero lag... not sure where the processing gets done, I think it's on the computer side, so should work fine with an iPad 1...

[Edit] Failed to notice the Splashtop one is also wired - looks good as well. Would advise against trying to go wireless on an iPad 1 (or anything later even) unless you have really good speeds...

Thanks for the replies guys, I've done alot of reading and installed a few programs on my pc. Will attempt to jailbreak it and install older versions of vlc etc so I can copy over some movies / clips. I'd use it as another monitor if I had a mac at home. Fly swatter, no flies around...cutting board, don't want gorilla glass in my food :D
 
Cool! Just a quick one in that both (?) of those external monitor apps have Mac AND PC client software options.

JBing it would obviously give you plenty of choices too - and would probably be a fun project! I might give that a whirl as well some day, having never done it. Good luck.

Agreed. I use the Parental Controls feature and set specific web pages in Safari, for him to watch Trucks for boys etc on Youtube through Safari. So he associates Safari with truck videos. But ja, not exactly full proof.
 
So I managed (after several unsuccessful attempts) to get a third party program that let me copy things to the ipad. Man that things battery is perfect after all these years! Loaded up a few downloaded youtube vids and the kid can use it for that when we travel :)

Good stuff. Ja, that Gen1 is pretty bombproof! Wish I could say the same about the Mini1! Wow, they're struggling on iOS 9!
