What to do with old HDDs?

A bit hesitant to suggest after a formite's response on another thread, but cut apart with a baby grinder.
 
Just drop it onto a hard floor from about desk height.

I mean, that's always enough to completely shatter platters on any HDD that you do NOT want to damage....

Except I can almost guarantee, that when you want it to work it won't.
 
I removed the platters from my old drives and drilles a hole in it and hung them around my garden as well as at the area where the dogs food bowls are.

Keeps the flying rats (doves) away from the dog food and other birds from the fruit trees.

Platters also make good coasters.
 
There are a lot of awesome parts in HDD's so personally, I would take them apart, you can use the motor, magnets and even the little reader stick thing.
