It shouldn't be hard to get financing. I've got no credit history and got approval from all the banks for financing of a R170k car. At that point the only "credit" history I had was that I was approved for a Virgin credit card 1 month before for which I'd made no payments.

If the Corsa is still in good nick, I would get the 4k and finance it over say a two or three year period (if you can afford to of course), but not over 48 months. You already know what the car is like, and whether it will last or not, better the devil you know and all that. During the time you pay off the Corsa you probably will get another increase or two, and then be in an even better position to buy a new vehicle.
To keep your debt in check it makes far more sense to pay off 42k, than 120k, simple. Even if the Corsa breaks down, you still won't be spending 120k for the vehicle.

I would say the right thing to do is to buy the car from her. You both agreed to this in the beginning and no matter how bad things turn out, it was still an agreement and you should stick to your side and just take the car dude.

and the price you getting it at, is cheap ....and low mileage ...you wont have problems ...and you can probably just settle a deal with her ....
At least a Corsa Lite is very reliable. We've had a few in the family and only 1 had a serious problem that cost about R5K total to repair (that is nothing compared to other cars where entry level problems cost you R5K).
Recently took my last Corsa (switched to i20 now) to the Midlands (Natal) and there are only dirt roads there. Drove all over the place even where it said 4x4's only, car had no problems going anywhere and it just kept going. Even started first turn (as it always does) with snow all over (did not expect that).

Corsa Lites are fun but only after :
1) The rear window shattered itself and got replaced with one that won't.
2) You installed decent speakers in the doors and in the speaker bays at the back.
3) It has got any tires on except for the crappy one it came with because those will aquaplane and kill you.
That being said, never buy your GF/Wife a car - ever. The Lite we had was actually given to her by my parent but she wanted aircon and all other nonsense in my Astra. Long story short I ended up driving the Lite which I traded in for a Corsa D as soon as I could.
Women have the tendency to make your ownership of cars a complicated process. Don't do it.

Opel themselves actually replaced the rear window about 3 months after she bought the car..so that is done and everything else in your checklist has also been done lol, I have a nice pair of 15" 185 low profile tyres...the car has grip like hell!
I think my best bet then would be just to finance the corsa over 3years as Mfour suggested, then in 3 years time I will be in a much better position to buy myself a new car! (Alfa Romeo Giulietta...

Thing is she incurred alot of cost as well as she bought most of the furniture etc we needed when we moved out... (she obviously kept it all)
So I dont mind really...guess the 10Grand is my loss for the break up... her loss was much greater I suppose.
