Hi Guys

After receiving my first etoll account today, it was R535 for 4 days, and the mail arrived late so I get no discount.
I know everyone says, DON'T register, and I haven't.
But, something in me says I must just bite the bullet and go register, I cannot afford to Pay R2500 extra each month waiting and hoping it gets canned, I also don't have another route I can take without out massively inconveniencing myself and being late.

So their scare tactics are working I guess, I hav'nt gone and registered yet, I first want others honest opinions, what do you honestly think will happen?, and are we just peeing into a fan with no hope if this being canceled?

So then just don't pay. What's the issue? Throw the bill in the bin and carry on about your life as normal.

Just remember that if you do register you are agreeing with their T&Cs and you agree that you will pay for using the eToll routes. I'm no lawyer but I reckon it would mean that should you not pay they can legally come after you. Again I'm not a legal expert so don't take my word for it.

tbh honest I think the Justice Project SA has it right - one really can't tell people what to do. When you've got evil scams like this which a political party pushed through with a majority then there is no right answer - you can't demand of others that they face that - it has to be a personal choice. The brave will resist & the rest can't be blamed for not being in a position to do so.

The best is to present the facts & let people decide. Go read their FAQ:
http://www.jp-sa.org/eTolls.asp

I'm in a tricky situation too - the car is not registered in my name, so I'm not entitled to take risks (debt, blacklisting etc) on someone else's behalf.

I realize it's a personal choice, I just want others thoughts.
Do you guys think there's hope in sight? That this might get canned?

If you do not listen to advice, ask for a detailed report from scamral.

R535 for 4 days is big. Are you a delivery man/ etol explorer, whatever.

Easy to make jokes when you stay in Welkom, and don't have these bills...
I drive from PTA east to Rivonia and back each day, I pass through 8 gantries there and back, and the average price per gantry on my account is about R15

Give it a while, I think they're gonna have serious problems regarding VAT, AFAIK they have to pay over all VAT charged within two months of an invoice being issued regardless if they have recieved the VAT or not from us, and with few people paying I think they're running into even more debt to SARS now on top of the original debtors

I.E total vat owed is more than the amount of money SANRAL is getting in from individuals paying their entire bill

So they'll probably get into liquidity issues in the not to distant future :D

I wonder how long it will be until we get the first court case of SANRAL vs. Public Joe.

SANRAL might have a catch 22 situation on their hands. Wait for as long as possible before starting to drag people to court. This will ensure that they maximize the amount of e-tag users and avoid a possible unfavourable court ruling.

On the other hand they can't afford to wait forever since they have debt to pay...Maybe pay off a judge before they go to court and all is right.

Facing the same situation after passing through those gantries and receiving a bill of R500 for the first 3 days, with more to come. It's crazy: we're being forced to either register and face ever-increasing costs in the next few years, or try to fight in the hopes of a reasonable outcome without any reliable indication of how long the process could drag on.

N14 + R55?

N14 + R55?

Only an option if you stay the west side of the N1 (too few ways to go across the N1 from east to west and all clogged up) and R55... well, if you have the time to commute 3 to 4 times longer and use twice the fuel its a viable alternative (this is if you want to travel during 6 to 9 am).

Hmmm, forgot they are coming from the North in the morning. Well alternative routes are never as good as the tolled ones and if an alternative route means you are going through two gantries instead of 8 and you don't owe them R500 every four days...

Taking Solomon Mahlangu to the N14 (Trichardt Rd), then taking the R55 and Main Rd to Randburg, takes ~1hr, if I leave by 05h00. Returning at 15h00 takes me 75-90min. This is NOT ideal, but seems to be the only way to (legally) avoid registering for e-tolls.

Easy for guys that won't rack up 25k a year to tell you to not pay. I suggest you get a tag, and cap this thing to 450 a month, something that isn't great but more manageable. If it gets canned, great. If it doesn't you've hedged your bets.

Got my first etol invoice.

You are just making Sanral richer by getting into greater debt with them.
You can always hope it goes away.
I bet a lot of people are putting their etags in their cubby holes so as to appear to be a rebel.
So don't be a House statistic that he warned about.
The only hope is that prices increase to such an extent, that the unions start striking. If not, no hope.

Proceed as follows;

1. Ignore all demands/communication from Sanral until you receive a LEGAL summons delivered by a sheriff to your door,
2. Then go to court, represent yourself and tell the judge that you are happy to pay after receiving all invoices with photo's and being given the time necessary to verify that that bills are correct,
3. The judge should then instruct Sanral to hand over all the documents required to prove their quantum and set a new court date,
4. On the return date you pay up if it is reasonable that the bills are in fact correct.

The point is that this process will take years and is unlikely to ever reach conclusion, so the chances are you will never have to pay.

If Sanral dont issue summons within 3 years of generating the invoice then it will prescribe (fall away and cannot be claimed).

When you sign their contract you sign away all your rights - so the above only applies to those who dont sign up for an etag.

You should highlight the last sentence like so. In fact, use this paragraph to start a new thread and ask for it to be made a sticky.
