OK So im currently running W7 on home pc. Its been running this since 3 years ago and is in need for a fresh install.

So i have 3 options
1) Reinstall W7 - using a linux distro
2) Upgrade to 8.1 - using a linux distro
3) Windows 10 Technical preview

Primary use of the PC is
1) running a plex server with 2 external hard drives connected.
2) Downloading using SABNZB and utorrent
3) Printing of documents
4) minimal web browsing etc.

What do you think is the best to upgrade to. Also 32 bit or 64 bit?

Specs are -
Core 2 Duo
4gb ram
intel graphics

I am interested in this thread as I have the same issue? Love my Windows 7 but its 32bit and need to upgrade to a 64bit option.

Well, w7 fresh install is nice, but I am starting to lean towards w8.1 with Start8 installed due to the much faster boot/shutdown time and the new task manager. Personal preference.

I'd reinstall Win7, 8 is horrible, and you're eventually going to have to reinstall windows 10 when the technical preview time expires

8 is horrible, agreed, 8.1 with Start8 not so much, it is pretty much windows 7 with faster boot/shutdown and better task manager like I said. You can trial it as well, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-8-1-enterprise for free 90 days. If you don't like it, go back to w7, won't have spent a dime. But really, do get Start8.

Install Linux Mint 17 64bit you dont need windows for what you are using it.

Well, he already has the w7 keys, so it doesn't matter. No point for him to go for a new operating system that he is totally unfamiliar with.

Regardless, it will be an upgrade and he would be much happier going forward.

You'll need 64bit hence the 4gb of RAM.

Not necessarily, he is using intel HD graphics, so he would not be disadvantaged by the 32bit limit memory limit. But yes, 64bit would be better in case you wish to add more RAM later on or adding a graphics card. Be careful of your printer not supporting 64bit, especially if it is a Canon.

You're using Microsoft products on an Intel chip?
You must not be so serious about your Israel boycott?

Considering that I suspect his "using a Linux distro" comment are in fact sarcasm and therefore he doesn't have keys I also fully support just using a real Linux distro for his specific needs which require no Windows whatsoever.

G2A.com has Windows 8 for around $25. MicrosoftStore.com have Windows 8 for R1440 and the student version of Windows 8.1 Pro for R480.

I suggest you buy it and not try to get help here regarding illegal versions of Windows.

Your use of that word is an eye sore...

@OP, what does that mean ("using a linux distro"), you using virtualbox on Linux, runing Win7?

OP edited the first post after I posted that. I was commenting on the other one who said go Linux, did not pick up sarcasm in that since it was perfectly valid.

I do not want help regarding illegal windows copy. Just which version of windows to use. $25 is not a bad price though
