So what is the story now exactly with MTN and Telkom anyway? Are they going to merge their networks? Will MTN get access to Telkom LTE network and Telkom to MTN network? What gives?

I stopped and asked one of the guys working at one of these strange towers and he said it is MTN FTTH! This was in Emily Hobhouse street in Weltevreden.

I wonder why FTTH need those towers?

Unless they are using wireless for backhaul - which seems a little silly.

Or it is some sort of monitoring system...

Whatever they're doing with those things, their placement in some places is downright dangerous. One box obscures oncoming traffic at an intersection forcing vehicles to creep into the road to get a decent look. Smucks.

I actually saw traffic circles in the UK that had intentional obscured line of sight to achieve this

There is a article in our little neighborhood gazette about some of the residents in Houghton having a nervous breakdown now because of a MTN tower that was put up as a lamp pole.
