dudes

hi im new to linux but need to set either of these up for monitoring
just not sure which one i use or where to download it ??? want to run it on vmware

Set up a linux box running IPcop, smoothwall, pfsense or untangle.

any linux dist will work for you.

IpCop is a linux distribution on its own, so you will need an application like virtualbox to run ipcop inside linux.

Dude thanks but i got lost by IPCOP is .... lol

where can i download the latest linux software and also virtual box ??

Sorry dude but i got no clue about linux used novell once and that was annoying as hell

Maybe if you can be a little more clear on what exactly you need to do, we could be more help:

Do you simply need to monitor traffic, i.e. amount of usage?
Do you need to limit traffic in a multi-user situation?
Do you need to change routing?
Do you simply need a firewall?
What is your base operating system?
How many PC's are involved? Just one or is a network you want to monitor?

There are several solutions, varying in complexity. Obviously you don't want something that is more complex with more features than you need.

I suggest you also google a little, e.g. you could easily find out where to download virtualbox by googling ;-)

Thanks Saber yeah look i have a house that has around 7 laptops that connect wirelessly to a adsl router there cap keeps running out and i want to monitor who is using the cap a lot and what has been downloaded I.E traffic on the network

no need for firewall or limits here just a plain monitoring of cap

will google Virtualbox now ;)

As far as I know all you need is IPCop. It can do all of that and even show you what sites was visited. IPCop is fairly easy to use and setup and you don't even need a powerfull machine.

IPCop doesn't have bandwidth monitoring statistics, it shows what sites were visited as it uses Squid (a proxy server), but it does not come with total bandwidth statistics :(

As far as I know untangle does, and it is a lot easier to set up and use than IPCop. If you're new to Linux, I would suggest Untangle.

Don't use pfsense, it runs off Unix and is quite a bitch to get going if you don't know what you're doing. And as far as I know, Smoothwall costs money.

thanks dude :) :) :)
do you have the website to download Linux the latest version please

appreciate your help

dude i know what it is but i just need a download link ?

please

What distro of Linux?

do you have the website to download Linux the latest version please
No, you do not seem to know what Linux is by that statement, either that or learn to type out full replies so that normal non-dude people can understand you.

Do you want Ubuntu, Mandirva, Fedora, SuSE, Gentoo, Debian, PCLinuxOS, Mint, CentOS? All of them are a flavour of Linux, so which one?

Most of them can be downloaded by reading the very first sticky topic in this Linux section:

i see there are many like suse ubuntu bla bla bla

just need like one that works with untangle and then ill start to learn it slowly

Untangle is it's own system if I remember correctly.

Also just google the name. It takes you to the main website which usually contains a link saying download somewhere on the page.
