What Vodacom subscribers really pay for mobile calls

these articles about the effective rate are largely meaningless

anybody with any understanding of things knows that the effective rate is higher than the standard rate (due to

With respect to the "Cost to Communicate" the important figure is what the effective rate is for a prepaid low RPU customer - basically can a person communicate with less than R30 a month and how many minutes call time will they have. In general I am of the view that the various promotional offerings from Vodacom are rather good at serving a large portion of that market and they should be commended for that BUT this doesn't licence being bloody stupid on other fronts. Entry broadband is still too expensive and middle revenue customers (especially now on contract) are not getting a decent deal under current circumstances - so pointing out an across network effective rate of 50 odd cents per minute is useless to the guy paying R1.20 per minute. On the other hand if an effective rate is quite different from a peak price in order to get more effective utilization of the network it is quite a different story. These articles never go into that sort of information at all.

What Vodacom customers really pay for calls

Vodacom has disclosed the average effective call rate across its prepaid and contract base, showing how much people really pay for mobile calls

Lies, damned lies and statistics.

“Our pricing transformation strategy is designed to reduce our effective PPM and therefore the cost to communicate,” said Vodacom.

Oh look, another lie.

“Although there is a lot of noise in the market in terms of 66c per minute or 79c per minute, we are managing to achieve a much lower effective price per minute,” said Joosub. “Our customers are enjoying much lower rates”.

And here are some more.

Vodacom has to be one of the most dishonest companies on earth. I guess it starts at the top, with Scameel.

Vodacom's spin-doctor Shameel Joosub says ...... oh please. They should back up their story with a Markinor survey.

So if the effective rate is x, why not just drop all of the fancy price plans and introduce one plan where the cost is x per minute (billed per second)?

Oh because Vodacom.

Because at this magical "effective" rate.. they don't make billions in profits.

+1

Why not just give all your subscribers this rate, why create complicated predatory type rates that only work on your own network and at certain times while standing upside down etc

Well, they have a pretty decent network.

Mostly, but I have found a few places where their network sucks. At work for example they really suck , I feel sorry for the company reps and clients of ours that try to use their vodacom data stick or tablet to log in to their servers or internet banking , it just doesn't work there's no throughput at all .I end up giving them our wifi password to get things done.

Funny thing is MTN is okay in the same building and cell C gets around 3,6mbps!
