It's a caterpillar

I've never seen one that looks like that. The hairy ones usually have spiky hair, not a freakin' peroxide, blow wave kind of thing.

Probably some variant of Eupterotidae - they turn into big-ass moths.

According to wiki they "occur in North America (11 species) and the New World tropics", so probably not. These things are local; I remember seeing an army of them march across a road in the Kruger once many years ago.
