What's for breakfast?

Just wondering as I checked through most of the breakfasts here, aren't you guys concerned at the amount of kCals you are consuming so early in the day? Sure its a good idea to have breakfast and kick start your body's metabolism but if you are having a high energy breakfast and lunch and supper you could be exceeding you GDA.

Interesting. What would constitute a "high energy breakfast"? Would oats + yoghurt (specifically regular fruit yoghurt) and rooibos be a wise choice?

a packet of wine gums and some fresh baked bread with butter

Would you mind expanding on your thoughts here and what your suggestion/s would be?

I know I am probably exceeding mine, but like most find myself lacking energy if I do not get a decent meal in.

OK, I'll try to explain. So basically you have a daily need for energy and this can be calculated with a few simple answers.

So for me [Male, 30yrs, 83kg, 189cm, Very Active] it is about 14015.54kj per day.

Currently I do something to line of :
Breakfast : Banana 400kj + USN shake 800kj + 200ml Milk 300kj = 1700kj
Lunch : Ryvita x 4 520kj
In between : Coffe x 4 1000kj
Supper : 300g steak 2500kj + Banana x2 smoothie 1000kj

So that totals to 6720kj daily. If you take into account that 1 kilo of body fat = 35000 kj then you can see why it takes ages too loose weight. Even if you go for a 10k jog it is only about 3350kj of energy burned at my body weight.

So yeah, I guess I'm just wonder if anyone else thinks of these things when they decide what to have for breakfast.

Thank you for the info. I really haven't thought about this at all. At best I think I am lightly active. Work from 7 to 5 and then study at night. Not a lot of time for exercise. I do climb stairs a lot at work rather than taking the lift. With 19 floors I can get a fair amount of exercise there. I do some push ups and sit ups but not nearly enough to offset my intake. I will need to give it some thought.

Sorry, but I don't agree with your diet.

You need a decent meal for breakfast even if you want to lose weight. Countless studies(can be found on bodybuilding.com) have shown that people who eat a decent breakfast have smaller waistlines. A shake and banana is hardly a decent breakfast especially if you live an active lifestyle. To be honest you don't even have a healthy diet, no offence, but where is your veggies and if you don't mind me asking whats your macros (protein, carbs and fat you get daily). Last year I wanted to lose some weight(85kg to 75kg) and my breakfast was the same as now, I had a mid morning snack, at lunch skinless chicken with brown rice, 4pm I had another snack and at night I had veggies. No shakes and I still managed to drop 1 kilo per week.

My normal breakfast is muesli, yogurt and some toast or a egg and coffee and I still manage to lose weight or maintain my weight of 75kg.

The standard weight loss rule of thumb is to eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a peasant.

I do the reverse and my dinner is king size. I avoid all carbs, even before races, no fats and sugar if possible and a crap load of protein (peas, meat, tuna, broccoli, etc). Sort of a semi-Atkinsons crash diet, but I would not recommend it to any one else.

I was just trying to point out a few basic like the amount of energy you need daily and the amount of energy stored inside 1 kg of body fat. Always good to keep that in mind when you have breakfast.

On my diet I do the occasional fast food and eating out thing, and yet I lost 40kg between November and May. I'll stick to it because it works for me and, even if I say so myself, my performance is not that bad - just finished a half marathon on 1:44:48

Anyone ever heard of grape jam? I found a old jar at the back of the cupboard, its really thick syrup-ish stuff made from hanepoot. Anyways, instead of putting it on toast I chucked it in the blender along with the obligatory two bananas. Made for a lovely grape&banana smoothy - a very yummy breakfast ;)

A humble bowl of oats porridge (it hits the spot)
