What's for supper - Second Course

I appreciate the suggestions and I've bookmarked them for future but I literally have max 30min to both prepare and eat dinner tonight before we have to hit the road. Sometimes life is just a rush and you need to compromise. But I won't compromise to the point of getting take aways when I can avoid it.

I know I can make this old recipe in 15min or less and the kids of course love granny's version which is why I want to make it as well. Left overs will used for the kids tomorrow night as well. Was just hoping to replace the powder. Think I might just stick to the original and experiment with alternatives later when I have the time.

Do report back on ouma se bolognaise mit melkkos en soppoeier

As for me, it's the fiancee's birthday tomorrow so we're off to camp in the Midlands this weekend. We've got a few friends joining us from Friday and we'll be catering the dinners for Friday and Saturday. Thursday night braai, Friday night mutton curry potjie (possibly bunnies if we can get someone to bring up unsliced bread) and Saturday I'll be doing a pulled pork on the Weber with freshly made soft flour tortillas.

Some help needed guys.

I have an old family mince sauce recipe from my childhood days that, among other ingredients and steps, calls for a packet of tomato soup powder to be reconstituted in evaporated milk.

But I absolutely loathe these instant soup packets. They just taste horrendous and I would like to replace that part with real/fresher/better ingredients. Which would you say will be a suitable replacement? Freshly chopped tomatoes, canned tomato puree or tomato paste?

And ratio if you would be that brave? Original recipe uses whole packet of soup mixed with 1 can of evaporated milk.

That's basically a cream of tomato soup which you can replace with a fresher version.

Example, http://allrecipes.com/recipe/21796/cream-of-tomato-soup/ there are ones with more ingredients out the.

Or you could try something really simple like mixing all gold tomato cocktail juice (yummy) with some fresh cream. Or use the canned juice/tomatoes from those italian/spanish tomatoes which is also very nice, I would probably use this with some cream or fresh fullcream milk.

Some nice alternatives. Thanks. Will definitely give them a shot next time.

I believe the reason for using packet soup and evaporated milk in this original recipe was exactly for the time saving element. It instantly gives you a nice thick and sticky sauce. Whereas with all the other options you would have to let the sauce reduce over time to get the same type of consistency.

I opted for the plain old recipe last night because of the rush we were in. I know cerebus is probably cringing about my choice in the end but bloody hell it was still nice. Brings back fond childhood memories that dish. Believe it can only be better if and when I do substitute some ingredients for fresher ones.

Wife actually took all the left overs for lunch today so kids will have to eat something else tonight.

:D If it's me, I'll just get takeout or heat up a ready-made meal from the supermarket. Ain't no shame in my game.

No chance of that ever happening here. It'll be Ouma's powdery bolognaise every night before I go that route! :D

We all have our yes and hell nos

On the ready made meal front I'm intrigued to try the Gordon ramsey and child healthy ones just to see

Made a lovely shin stew with roasted butternut. Nearly cut off the tip of my little finger while dicing the carrots.
