What's for supper?

What did you have?

Surf n Turf.

Came with a steak so think I swear it was a minute steak (and was about 100g as opposed to the advertised 200g). Asked for rare, they didn't even cook the thing. It still had ice-crystals in the middle and was completely blue - not even a sear on the outside. Manager says they'll do it again. Instead, he brings back the same steak and calamari, but now they've burnt the steak to the point that it is so overdone, tough and inedible that I just pushed it aside and focused on the calamari. Calamari look dark at this point because they didn't do a fresh batch, they simply doused it in more basting and cooked it again. It was like chewing on rubber with sweet gravy powder.

By this point food had been finished at the table so I didn't want them to make it again - they had the chance to do that already. Instead I expected it to be taken off the bill because I ate none of it. But the manager sends the waiter to tell me they will take R60 off the bill. The surf n turf was R150. So I paid R90 for two pieces of rubbery calamari and two slices of basting-flavoured leather. The sushi starter that we had was old as well - the rice had dried up to the point of it sticking to the roof of your mouth every time you tried to chew.

I decided not to make a scene about any of this as it was a date. I simply won't return.

I've never understood restauranteurs' reluctance to refund someone for legitimate issues. The R90 they secured last night cost them thousands in future revenue. Very, very silly management...

that sucks DJ. especially when you on a date you dont wanna lose it and try to have a good time.

If you do not mind sharing, which CTFM is this?

That is very poor service. I have now learnt to take the owners number, give them a call and explain the problem (also take picture of the food).

Managers and owners have very different views on how clients should be treated.

I do however understand that you one would not like to make a scene when out with friends or on a date :(

I would never order a steak at a fish restaurant and never fish at a steak house.

Cape Town Fish Market. Was disgusting!

A man of your food and taste calibre went to CTFM???

The only acceptable CTFM is based in Stellenbosch; the rest throughout Western Cape is not even mediocre. Somerset Mall is probably the worst! I never returned to CTFM again since 2008.

He can't help it. He's Bipolar and his brain has been poisoned with Chantix.

Anyway I think my last visit to CTFM was in 2008 too. I am surprised they are still around.

Eastgate. Yeah, didn't want to be taking pics and causing a fuss on a date...:D

I assumed they'd be decent based on price...:o

Was a quick-pic decision at Eastgate. Decided on there because they did sushi. I'd only ever been to one other CTFM and couldn't remember if I like it or not...

A CTFM, given your predilection for decent grub, would be in my books the last place you would be seen even dead in .

Oh. Well I let my date choose and CTFM ticked the right boxes in terms of menu items for us. Pity their food is awful. I don't only eat out at exclusive Michelin-star restaurants, contrary to popular belief. A simple fish and chips, or a burger, a steak, ribs etc can be awesome. People in general have incredibly schit standards though, which is why these large chains get away with charging you and I R150 for a R20 (at cost) meal, and then pretend to be doing you a favour when they knock off some bucks from your bill for a horrendous meal.

I've heard people tell me that they've had the best seafood ever at Ocean Basket, for example. Actually you just had the best garlic butter. Drenched in everything to mask the fact that the prawns you're eating are mealy, over-cooked and old. Thankfully I now know that CTFM is just another Ocean Basket, albeit dressed up as an actual restaurant...

I don't get what it is about CTFM. They've got the menu and variety right, but their food just isn't edible. It's rather sad, actually. You get this vibe that it's a decent place when you walk in.
