It's an enhanced version of silent mode. Not terribly exciting but very practical.

Battery life, no other reason.
A device left in standby mode but running suspended apps in the background will lose anywhere from 8%-15% battery life overnight vs the 1%-2% if all processes are properly closed. 4s Jailbroken running 5.0.1...

I would like to say RAM too, but a device running with 40mb available RAM is as responsive as a device running 350mb available RAM.

You can delete entire threads one at a time or you can select smses within a thread and select the ones you would like to delete

I receive an average of about 50+ sms's per day from 10 different numbers at work. I need to check them all and then delete. When a system or something goes down, this can jump to up to a 1000 sms's. sucks

That must be a side-effect of some jailbroken software because it is not true for standard iOS.

Can't say for sure. It's a bit of melting pot at the mo. I can only comment on the returns I'm getting from a single charge, jailbroken and taking the steps I have to improve the situation.

I've yet to pinpoint the issue exactly, but I'm sure Facebook and Instagram running in the background has a noticeably negative effect on my battery life. I've disabled push notifications, but Facebook still gives me badge app icons. I now close them properly and anecdotal evidence suggests that battery life has increased.
Running iOS5.1 standard on iphone4.

Correct, Whatsapp is another culprit. Suspended in the background and closed properly has a significant impact on battery life.
Push notifications only impact battery life when they actually occurring so you can have push notifications on all day and it will have little to no impact if you've received 0 notifications.
