I'm no DA fan, but I still voted for them. Why? Because it's more important to send a message to the ANC than it is to send a message to the DA. No matter how bad the DA might be in power, they can't be worse than the ANC.

2. There was clearly a budget allocated to this. They just happened to go over budget. I'd be interested in confirmation that the entire R5.2 million budget was on furniture as insinuated above.

It will be reasonably easy to check the municipal budgetary documentation to verify

Here is the irony that exists:
There are many DA politicians who are feathering their own nest especially in local government - this is a trait across the board - and even in horribly underperforming municipalities [an effective civil society sector or press corps tends to hold the DA councillors in opposition to vote against paying out heftier salaries to politicians, but the party still has to crack the whip on the point] we've seen politicians across the spectrum vote together to give themselves more money while retrenching skilled staff.
The DA has been involved in some horrible misuses of public funds and power and many of the worst career politicians in the ANC today crossed the floor.
BUT unlike the ANC we know about these things - without years of intrigue and spy tapes and bull**** - unlike the ANC I know that if I discover outright corruption by a DA councillor it would take one email (in either an "official" or personal capacity) to the relevant people and it will be dealt with by the party - and in some cases that will mean said person moving over to another party.


It is fundamentally a truth of politics that the only way for an organization (particularly a political party) to not become complicit, particularly through the actions of a crooked individual, in public malfeasance is not to hold any office.

The DA are getting complacent because they know they will get votes just because they aren't the ANC.

Next time vote for a different party like I did to demonstrate that you hold them accountable.

Dude... i'm about as much of a DA supporter as you can get... but heads need to role here and they need to know that this is NOT ok.

It's not a case of "we have to vote either ANC or DA". It's a case of kicking ***** politicians out of the party, or kicking the party out. The DA carries my vote on condition they don't fck up like the ANC... and not a step further.

There seem to be no further reports, I would think if there is even the tiniest bit of merit to the story the ANC would have jumped on the bandwagon already?

Either way, I'm waiting for one of the political parties to release a statement before passing judgement.

All politicians are lying scum and the DA are no different. If they had the majorty vote like the ANC does they would be doing the same stuff.

I’ll buy the lying scum part but no way would the DA behave like the ANC. The DA lying scum would be more coherent and amenable to criticism and debate than the ANC lying scum are.

No they won't. They only went 9% over budget, some times things in the budget is worked out incorrectly. Think of all the budgets the ANC will have to explain if they jump on this band wagon.

Any way Knysna has a clean audit, so they will be able to see where all the money went. If there is anything fraudelent or suspicious there it would have been picked up.

I didn't say the DA is like the ANC. If that was read into it, then I retract. I said if they f' up LIKE the ANC. At the moment they are very far away from the ANC. The ANC rot starts at the top and filters all the way down. The DA at the top are pretty darn excellent. At worst here we have some low level peeps potentially abusing power. If that's proven to be the case, they need to be cut out swiftly.

I don't know how true or untrue the story is at present. The lack of momentum indicates that it likely isn't. If it is however, i'm not going to sit back and make excuses for it. It should be all or nothing in the DA... either you are all in and straight as an arrow, or GTFO.
