Hi, I'm a total noob when it comes to this, but what is the difference between a data contract,
e.g. MTN
Sim only - 1GB for R69 pm x 24, or
addidng 1 GB data bundle to your existing contract for R149.
Is it the 'quality' of the data or ??

Nothing. The data contract is cheaper because you're locked in for the next 24 months.

I fully understand the difference between bundled and contract. What I do not understand is why I cannot enter a 24 months contract at R69 pm and link it to my phone, which is my 3G device. According to MTM the 1GB deal can only be granted with a separate SIM and number, and cannot be linked to an existing SIM. Apparently something to do with billing, but I cannot see why there should be a problem with providing such a contract.

For contracts watch OOB sharks and also there is a matter of advancing unused data. On Vodacom you can only use roll-over data every second month (otherwise you will lose it due to obfuscated roll-over policy).
Normal add-hoc bundle has no such pitfalls.

IMO you're much better off with adding a bundle to your existing contract.
I pay R149 for a 1Gb bolt onto my MTN contract. This will last 2 months if unused and I can add it on again when needed.
I am not tied into any stand alone contract, and if something better comes along I can jump on it without waiting 2 years.

The only benefit of the stand alone data contract is receiving a device like a modem/tablet that the contract assists you in paying off. Ultimately, you'll always pay more than the device costs up front, but spread out over 2 years.
