Besides the size between the two, what is the difference between them? What makes blu ray better than DVD?

I would like to buy an Avatar movie in the next few months and I was wondering if it would be better to buy a blu ray cd or a dvd cd, I would also have to buy a blu ray player before that ofcourse. I already have a dvd player. So would watching Avatar on a dvd be inferior than watching it on blu ray?

Erm yeah... 720x480 vs 1920x1080 ... You will see a huge difference...

Btw its BluRay and DVD, not BluRay CS and DVD CD

Blu-Ray has a much larger storage capicity than DVD, blu-Ray 25-50GB - DVD 4.5-9GB
So much more information can be stored, thus they can store higher quality video and sound.

I have seen Avatar DVD and Blu-Ray side by side on a samsung led, the Blu-Ray knocks the socks off it!
It really is stunning stuff.

+1
no point of having blu ray if u dont have an HD tv

Believe that everything is smoother, less blurry and faster as well (camera work and so on).

And the local DVD version (rental at least) is the wrong aspect ratio according to the box.

I've got Avatar on Blu Ray and believe me its spectacular! On an HD TV ofcourse.

I am assuming Sly meant technology wise, how is a bluray different to a DVD? I mean is the actual disc different, or just the laser that read/writes it? What actually makes the bluray better than a dvd, we all know a bigger size video file will yield a better quality.

Easier just to google or wikipedia this, probably more informative than asking on an open forum anyways... (no offence to anyones knowledge)

To the post above, bringing up the question of technology; Blu-ray uses a blue laser, while DVD uses a red laser. That is the key difference. The blue light has a smaller wavelength, and is thus able to manipulate the disc at a much finer scale. Thus, the density of information on the disc is much higher, and you can store far more data in the same area.
