Hi guys
Still trying to decide which console to go with and i was just wondering what the difference is between the two consoles online gaming.I know that you pay(Not sure how much) for Live and PSN is free but other than that what is the difference between the two?

Unification.

Xbox Live is a centralized service with physical infrastructure that is run and maintained by Microsoft. PSN is more like PC's - Each game runs on it's own infrastructure.

What that means is that when you log into Live you have a single account and friends list that's available in all games all the time. Not only that, it allows cross game messaging and voice chat (If your mate is playing something else you can still talk to them) That also extends to cross game invites. Live also integrates with MSN/Live Messenger for PC, so you can message someone in a game from a PC and vice versa. There's also Xbox.com, which extends a lot of that functionality onto the web.

That's the basics, then there's the less technical stuff.

Xbox Live Arcade is huge compared to PSN with games ranging from Arcade classics to Indy hits like N+ and Alien Hominid. All games come with free trial versions, which are basically the full game but locked, so no double downloads. Highlights for this year so far look to be Pirates versus ninjas - Dodge ball, Castle Crashers, Happy Tree Friends, and Penny Arcade Adventures. There's usually 1 or 2 released every Wednesday for about $10 each.

Demo's and Beta's. PSN has caught up on getting game demo's, but not beta's. Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Battlefield: Bad Company, were all released in beta on the 360 for early playtesting. It's part of the 360 development platform, not so with PSN.

In 4 regions there's also "Video Marketplace" - basically the ability to download movies and TV series directly to your 360. We may never get it here, but at least it remains a possibility. We can hope ;)

Then there's achievements.
This ones a double edged sword. They're little points noddy badges you get accomplishing something in a game. (Finishing a level on a cetain difficulty, killing 3 guys with one grenade etc etc) Each 360 gamer has a 'gamerscore' which is the accumulated score of all achievements attained. They sound odd, out they get addictive! What they do do is incentivize you to explore parts of a game that you may otherwise overlook. A game like Crackdown is a good example of how Achievements add to a game.

The final matter is community. The ZA live community looks to be at least 4 times the size of the PSN community. (based on forum userstats) Current guestimate is around 3000 guys in SA on live. With the unified system, it means finding running games at any time is a cinch. You pull up you friends list see who's playing what and join a game in progress. No searching for populated servers, no trying to find your mates. Tack "Friends of Friends" onto that, where you can also look at your friends friends list and join their games. And you've got a system built specifically for online play.

O.

And how could I forget! Community Arcade! Is the ultimate in user generated content. Think about it, using tools that are absolutely free, anyone can write games and publish them on the 360. The mind boggles! All those awesome flash games, Line Rider, Crayon physics, Desktop tower defence, all those games could come to Live. I've played the 7 which were released for free and they're great. "Dishwasher the last samurai" and "Jelly car" were awesome! If you're dubious, we're not talking actual flash here, it's all based on XNA / .NET which is good stuff that can do full 3D, physics, dynamic lighting, the works (but obviously not up to the level of a full 360 game)

Community Arcade should launch around mid year.

EDIT:  that was way longer than I though ...

Xbox 1 - PS3 0

Thanks doobiwan,il have to read that again to grasp everything you said:)
Live sounds awesome!Ive never played online but from all the reading ive been doing the online factor seems like a neccesity these days, with DLC and demos and stuff.
I read in another thread you gave a website for the adsl but was wondering what kind of adsl line(Speed) do you need to play online?
I mainly play soccer games like fifa and pro evo.
also is there a difference between dowloading and lagging on live vs psn?

Whats your personal opinion of PSN lycanthrope?(Thats if you play online with your PS3)

I haven't had much online experience with my PS3, but from what I have seen, it's unimpressive. Rumour has it they're upgrading it sometime this month, but beyond that, I can't really say, sorry.

PlayStation Home is a completely different experience which looks interesting... but there is no date on that.

I play FIFA 2008 online with a 384 shaped line with little to no problems. PES's online is screwed on both platforms so if you want multiplayer get FIFA.

PSN gets bonus points for being free and available locally.

However Live is the better service, this is not really debated by anyone except the complete fanboys.

if you planning to play online xbox is the console, I was always a sony fan but for this generation I wanted to play my games with other ppl not just by myself so I got the xbox, plus the local community is quite big and you can play alot of lag free games

Thanks gavin.
I dont think i want to be paying every year to use a service thats not even available in our country.Seems abit messed up.
so xbox live >> PSN
Oh btw your site is very cool...been lurking on there for a while now.Funny to read the ps3 fanboys vs x360 fanboys.

The thing is, all I want really is to be able to play games online vs or with other people - the rest of this stuff is nice, but kinda unnecessary. In fact XBL is a lot like Steam, only Valve offers Steam for free. PSN is free. Frankly I think being able to play online for free far outweighs a paid-for service that has some additional extras.

This is the main reason that I've pretty much gone back to PC gaming and use my xbox for GH only - I want to play online, but am simply not prepared to fork over cash to M$ for a service that I can get free elsewhere.

Good point blue collar.I must say that i have noticed that xbox fans use the ps3's price against it but nobody really says much about the fact that M$ is charging i think R800 a year for their xbox live service.if they have 3000 members in SA then that means they are making R2400000 a year with that service.if my maths(And assumtions) are correct.

The only bit of XBL that's not available in SA is the video Marketplace. everything else works 100%. (except for ze darn Germans ;) If they ban something we can't get it either)

The only thing you can't do if you don't pay is play online, as far as the other stuff like Arcade, comms and demo's etc are available to everyone.

In terms of what you're paying the most expensive option is R80 per month, going down to around R40 depending on the region you select and length you buy. (A 1 year US account is R360 through http://www.microsoftpointsxbox.com/mspoints.php .)
{EDIT: Actually, it's $44.99 for 13 months, so thats R28 a month, that's really nothing}

Yes, free would be nice, but someone has to cough up for those servers that PSN doesn't have. I think of it like this - a Movie will entertain you for 2 hours and will cost around R80 once you factor in snacks and parking. I play mostly online, R80 (I screwed myself) a month gets me 3-4 hours of entertainment every single night.

There's a lot of pressure on Microsoft to make some form of Live play free. I have a suspicion they'll do something this year.

Why are you paying R80 a month doobiwan instead of R360 a year.or am i missing something?

I just renewed my uk account for R360 for the year.

The R80 is if you renewed your xbox live gold 12 month throught the
xbox marketplace 40 GBP per year.

I bought at 23.75 GBP.

so if you look around you can buy it cheaper.

I also do not seem to be able to buy classic Xbox titles online. Can you?

Dude £24 is an awesome price, was that from ebay?

@Cash, I hopped on and selected my region before I really thought about it or looked that the numbers. At the time the Rand was a lot better to the pound so didn't bother me that much. I also thought selecting a PAL region would be beneficial, but in terms of online play and match making it's not, it's irrelevant.

Also the online stores weren't available then, so I just stuck in my credit card details and was paying R50 a month, US would have been R40 per month.

My Credit Card is expiring soon so I'll have to switch to prepaid, which is fine, I just had a look and a 1 year UK account is R526 So that's R43 a month. See my previous update, if you go US you can get it for R28 a month.

btw, you can still use an Xbox online for free, if you're prepared to organise your own games and use Hamachi or X-link Kai. ;) Personally the PT is worth R80, let alone R30 a month to me.

EDIT: Thanks ernst, oh yeah, Xbox originals, I forgot about those :$
Unfortunately they're also region locked, but being 3Gb+ they're also a bit problematic until we can get local servers anyway.

yes got it from ebay.

this guy.

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/ltd_goods/

they emailed it to me directly

wanted to get from definitplay.co.uk, but had already bought points and couldn't do another transaction the same week.

It was not send directly only about 2 hours later , but contained a pic taken of the code. and worked fine.

Personally in this regard I think you get what you pay for.

PSN works but it is nothing like Xbox Live, and I use virtually all of the features in Xbox Live. Last night I was in a COD4 match, having a online chat with someone who was playing an arcade game and then accepted an invitation to a Gears match and just moved over...

The integration is well worth the money in my humble opinion..

I used to be a huge PC gamer but in PC gaming everything is very segregated... It's not like someone in Starcraft can message you in your counter strike messaging system without doing some fancy garbage in between.

If you want to play multiplayer I highly recommend Xbox Live

[edit]
I just posted this
http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/mgs-tells-psn-to-go-jump/
Basically it shows why unified servers are a must if you want to offer a true online service... unified servers have to be paid for unfortunately
