Actually it was the obvious motion blur on the 120hz one I bought and took back to exchange for a plasma (that doesn't have motion blur) :)
The only way to convince me by using it for what I like to use it for... if it annoys me to use it, it's the wrong one. Turns out I'm a plasma man (in the bracket I can afford)

Okay, that makes more sense :) I definitely agree that the only real way to choose a TV is to test it throughly, using the exact scenario you'll have at home (same video sources, some connections, some viewing conditions, etc). So having it at home is the best option.
 
I do feel lucky being able to take it back, I must admit. Big up to House and Home for taking it back 2 days after I purchased (provided I buy another model I guess) :)
 
Yep :) Pretty much all major store have a 7 day return / exchange policy. I returned a TV after 6 days for a full refund. Normally they don't mention that a refund is possible, but it normally is.
 
Wow... thanks for that point Greg... I guess I should really read the fine print with these places. Nice to know for future.
 
I just went to look at the PS43D450 at Game. The plasma is worse off in connectivity options compared to the LA40D550 (only 2 HDMI and 1 USB, no ethernet) but it does have enough inputs for me to cope...
And importantly it doesn't seem to have the "colour edge/fringe" that personally bugs ME on the LA40D550 so I'm thinking of exchanging it BUT the picture (a divx file) also seemed "grainier" on the plasma than I have been experiencing on the LCD in the past few days - this as I see it is either due to the bigger size OR could it be the store settings? I don't want to exchange it and lose the good price I paid for the LCD only to be worse off..
Opinions please?

Lack of HDMI ports can be solved by buying a cheap +- R200 HDMI splurged.

Graininess is a result of viewing the plasma up close from abnormal viewing distance.

Glad you like it a bit better.
 
I have something to add to the thread despite my pride :)
It turns out the lag and motion blur I was getting on the LG LED I'd got first was actually due to a setting on my Wii. It was plugged into one of the AV ports and configured for 50hz with slightly higher resolution.

I had similar issue on the plasma (granted the blur was definitely not as noticible). Sorting the frequency to 60hz as is the standard here, the motion issues were history immediately.

I must admit I do feel like a prize prawn but on the other hand, i'm happy with the plasma and wont be returning it even tho its a bit more than I'd originally planned to spend :) The plasma has an awesome crisp picture and the viewing angle is way better. The LED was an edge lit model so probably not as good if you're fussy. Full panel LED is better but more expensive. If you're looking to spend in the R4000 or less range, then a 32" LED isn't too bad but this weekends special at game for R5000 42" Samsung plasma is really really good.

So there you have it - I was a hasty twit but I learned something good... modern TVs have way too many tweaks rofl.
 
First impressions of the 43D450 plasma after exchanging it for the 40D550 LCD: on the plasma I am not seeing the "fringing" (not sure if this counts as motion blur?) that bugged me on the LCD, and my SD content looks fine (definitely better than in-store).
My HD content doesn't seem to pop out and say "wow I look good" like it did on the LCD though - but this could be because I turned a lot of my settings down to "wear-in" the screen a bit. I can do more comparisons in a few days. Even if not, I'm not too concerned that the difference between HD and SD is less noticeable since I currently have very little HD (and for a while little prospect of getting more until blueray etc content comes down in price!).

So for MY tastes and preferences, I'm currently more satisfied with the plasma than I was with the LCD. YMMV!

Concerning Gabonica's comment about modern TVs having "too many tweaks" - while I was in Game exchanging the screen there were several other people returning screens - one saying they got no picture; another saying the picture was "stretched" - my guess is a LOT of people think something is wrong when its just a setting that needs changing - some settings harder to spot (e.g. Gabonica's wii frequency) than others (picture size on the remote). If my "fringing" was a setting then it was a deeply buried one because I checked every menu item on both my DVD player and the LCD..
 
Samsung have stated that their newer plasmas don't need breaking in but good on you for doing it anyway. You can just leave it on a TV channel (if you have TV) for a few days overnight (+-100 hours). So cell light, brightness and contrast should be run at about half way.

Will be interesting to hear what you have to say once you've cranked up those settings (while the LCD is still fresh in your mind :)).

IIRC my PS42C450 is set to Standard mode with cell light at about 10/14, brightness about 70%, contrast about 80%. Will confirm some time, maybe the settings will be good for you as well.
 
Divv, absolutely right about so many settings, it's mind blowing, but ultimately once you've settled in, it's awesome. What gets me though is those stores have them all set differently and a way more expensive screen can look pretty kark next to a cheapie if badly tuned or connected to a bad signal. The salesmen at the bigger stores are clueless. Dedicated AV stores are obviously better but you pay a little more *usually*.

It's incredible, I have a bigger screen but now that i'm shot of my old Hifi stuff I have so much more space - less is more IMO when it comes to lounge. The place gets cluttered way too quickly.

Thanks Pot for sharing your wisdom, one of the reasons this forum is such a cool place. RPM, give that man a Bells.
