What's there to know about tvs?

You should check the letters at xxxxxxx. Having a 'D' supposedly shows a VA panel, and a 'W' shows S-IPS.

You should also check with a magnifying glass, as above.

This could help you if you want to return the unit, since if at any point S-IPS was noted as a feature, and you have a VA panel, you should have the right to return it as not being what you paid for.

S-PVA if sq01, etc panel, MVA otherwise.

moer: If it is an MVA panel (if it is VA, it will almost certainly be MVA), try this rather strange test. Turn down the brightness a fair amount and see if the motion blur is still as bad.

YAY, the manager at the shop was very accomodating and being a plasma man himself, was totally sympathetic to my LED motion blur woes. His black and white take on the situation is as follows:


LED for 200Mhz and higher - they come into their own where plasmas range ends - nice for very much high end.
For 42" and up to the previous range, Plasmas
For 32" and down - LED/LCD are affordable, but don't expect to be thrilled with motion in high speed gaming.

So I'm getting the Samsung unit you recommended Pot (PS43D450) - thanks a heap, I'm feeling alot better about it. Their price is R5500.

Anyone interested in a plasma, Game are selling a 43" Samsung for R5000 this week and it includes a DVD player - not a bad deal although I can see buyers handing out the DVD player to their parents who still have VCR lol.

Now I don't know the model number, but I suspect it's the same one that Pot mentioned earlier (PS43D450). Everyone seems to be getting new stock in of that model. Some say the box is labelled PS43D451 but the TV is the PS43D450.

The plasmas I've found so far all seem to have lower resolution (1024*768) vs their lcd/led counterparts. Is that going to be a major issue when watching sports/playing ps3?

There's a special at Makro for the Samsung UA40D6000 (FHD LED/LCD 40" 100Hz 3D), leaning towards that at the moment just because it seems like a nice balance between the resolution (1920*1080) and refresh rate (>50Hz)
 
For gaming I'd probably want 50" HD Ready/720p plasma, as it is 1366x768 opposed to 42" HD Ready/720p which is 1024x768. For sport though, and other HD/720p/1080p content, I could not be happier with my PS42C450. Also remember, 99.5% of PS3 games are 720p or less.

How much is the LED LCD? I would rather go 40" 6 Series LCD if it must be 1080p. That said, I'd rather take 50" HD Ready plasma in my situation. Would cost less, too I think. ;) What about 50" 1080p plasma at R10k?

It is actually 200hz, according to the model specs (makes sense for 3D). For a 3D HDTV it looks pretty decent for the price, but I don't know that much about LED backlit TV's.

Just be aware that the old 50C550 had a Anti-reflective coating... and the 51D550 does not. The 51D550 is MUCH more reflective.

The LED LCD is 10k at makro (with 2x 3D glasses) what's the 50" plasma you are talking about? (link please)

@Rudimental: I'm pretty sure the samsung site said 100Hz, got to go now so don't have time to check but where do you see it being 200Hz?

It's ±R10,000 at various places. I think the lowest I've read on these forums is R10,200. Don't have any links at the moment though. Model numbers to check are PS50C550 and PS51D550.

I think it needs 200Hz to be 3D?

I assume that it is this one (with SR appended): UA40D6000SR

In any event, any UA40D6000 I could find, e.g. Samsung Australia site, listed same specs, and typically you need 120hz+ for 3D.
 
It seems only the plasma-fundis are here :P Watch me get a plasma then suddenly all the pro-lcd guys jump in.

Hehe, almost every TV related thread does!

Unfortunately neither are perfect - one is not better than the other. LCD and Plasma both have issues - you just have to decide which issues you can live with! :D
 
Yeah, .001ms response time on an entry plasma vs 1.2ms on an entry LED... no brainer for me.

If that was your reasoning for making a choice between Plasma and LCD (or LED as you say), then you are very misinformed...
