What's your freelance rate for projects?

Lately I have been thinking the freelance work I do just isn't worth the time and hourly rate I charge. So Im thinking of upping my rate a bit as I haven't done this for some time. This got me curious...so what do you guys charge out as your hourly rate for freelance projects (I do web development)?

1. < R100
2. R100 - R199
3. R200 - R299
4. R300 - R399
5. R400 - R499
6. R500 or more

Im sitting on number 3... ;)
 
No 3? That's not bad.

If you ask R200 per hour and you work like 10 hours a day you can make R2000 a day. Do this 30 days a month and you have R60 000pm. Of course you will need enough clients. Didn't know web freelancing pays that well. :D

LOL! I wish it was that simple. Have full time job....and do freelance on the side. So its not easy...gotta sacrifice personal time as all work is done after hours. An work is never constant...have gone with gaps of no work for months...then all of a sudden it just piles on and you really have no time! So at the end of the day...I really only manage 3 hours a day...when there is work...really not a "cool" as it seems....eish!
 
clientsfromhell.net will show you that it doesnt pay that well, and you do get stuck with the logically and payment impaired in society.
 
For sure. Its not easy...and like one project Im working on...it spiralled out of control and now Im losing out (not gonna do big projects for people I know next time...small website are fine...but not big ones like the current one, really shot myself in the foot with this one). But 80% of the times its ok, and thank goodness I havent yet had someone that didnt pay. Granted, I tend to scope out the potential work first...and if Im not happy, rather turn them away than risk issues later...
 
I do work for £30ph as and when I get the work in. I do not look for work, a project comes to be every few months. I do this to spoil myself and buy things like Kindles and iPads and the like :D
 
I normally do for small jobs R 450 p/h but for projects I discuss a rate with clients :)

But 90% of the time each project is based on a brief and a subsequent quote.

Same...dont go looking for it. Wish I could spend that cash on myself...goes towards our son or the house most times...hahahaha. Fail... :p

Ok, sometimes find the rate they want to pay is not worth the time. Land up saying sorry, cant take on project.

Hmmm...10% of the time its a brief...and I go with the flow. Maybe I need to write up project specs instead of relying on the clients....

In terms of a brief - i ask for what they want/need in terms of content and i often reply with a detailed break down of the software i am using and how it will be structured - going through this admin allows you to get a solid point to quote on - and i get the client to sign on it.

So if changes and creep start happening i have grounds to charge more.

I learnt this the hard way

Interesting thread.
I have to agree with CrazyFig here. Its alot of work and its can get very time consuming, especially if you have a full time day
job. The extra money is nice but the sacrifices you have to make for that extra money is not so nice.
 
R500-R800/h depending on client for freelance.

I'm also on permanent contract - so freelance work only gets done a few times a year.
 
I'm also permanent on contracts and don't really have time for all the effort and support for freelance projects. Since I earn @ 6 for my normal work anyway freelance will have to be higher.
 
Depends on the complexity, length and effort required for the project.

Yep...current project falls into this bracket...but have to finish. Some payment is better than none..so abandoning it is not an option unfortunately.

Yeah...have turned ppl away due to badly written systems (making the work too complex and not worth the effort)

Who's ever happy with their current income? If you can get more, why not? :p

PLUS - I want to pay off my car and house as quickly as possible. More income would enable me to do just that, without accepting freelance projects as often as I have to currently. Freelancing is becoming the death of me right now - my day-job is stressful enough, but freelancing just kills any extra time I might have after hours and on weekends. I guess being THAT good at my job puts me in a demand that I can't meet... :D
