What's your freelance rate for projects?

I actually just quit my day job, because doing both was killing me - and i would rather nip for cash and work for myself than slave for someone else.
 
I still see supporting the piece of work when freelancing can become a issue as people like to take advantage of you when you do freelance work for somebody.

A nice quote somebody sent me:
Walking on water and developing software from a specification are easy if both are frozen.

I'm just not confident enough yet to do freelancing full-time. That requires me to continually market and sell my skills if work's not pouring in. I'd rather go for relative security in my day-job and do some freelance jobs when I feel I have the time to do so. At the moment, I have to do freelance jobs just because I need to pay off debt. Yes, I can stick out the full term of the loan agreement, but I'd prefer not to. Besides, when I have no house / car debt, I can save and spend more money and enjoy life a lot more.

Just my opinion, I suppose... :)

Indeed. I have been in and out of jobs based on my financial situation - held my current job (End next monday - w0hoooooo) for two years - mainly becasue i knew i was going to be getting married and would need spare cash - but in the intrim - paid off car and wedding and i am relatively debt free - bond done in a few months to and then i am genuinely debt free.

So hence the desire to be my own man again.

But it is very much a pain in the ass - marketing, dealing with people who think you are a credit line etc.

That's a bit difficult - that would mean I'd have less work... :p Besides, I spent years building up my current contact list. If you want I can sell some names and numbers to you? $$$
 
Ok, seriously, a question to you guys that do a lot of freelancing, in what $$$$ region are freelance projects going at the moment. I don't mean how much do you charge but more what is the budget for the total projects, or at least the freelance bits.
 
I know a lady who's gonna do me a free website Lol

So lucky eh.. I could have spent R2000 but now I'm getting it free. I've seen her work and its quite stylish done.

I will pay her a couple of hundred for the job.. If my website is successful I would end up paying her more too.


My website will be a place where I sell certain items.

People will be buying using Paypal. I wonder if she will take the nessicary precautions when developing my website. She actually just does the layout, her boyfriend does le Coding :D

Sounds a bit dodgy to me though... I've seen (and heard of) people claiming certain work to be part of their portfolio just to get the job. Sounds to me like she's trying to get some sort of portfolio together by doing jobs for free, or donations.

But seriously, she did work for a web design company in JHB for a couple of years where she met her Boyfriend.

She is a family friend for like 10 years so I know I can trust her, she developed a website for my aunt's guesthouse. Looks quite nice

I will pay her something (which she can share with her bf) if I see the website contains what I need from my website.

It will need Live Chat support that directs emails to my blackberry.

Also Shopping cart ofc etc. And I hope that it would be safe so that my customers won't get scammed out of their money.

I'd rather trust people I know personally rather than go to people who I don't know if I can trust but might have superior skills.

Do you actually know what you are looking for, this doesn't seem like a simple web site if you need live chat as well as a payment gateway / shopping cart

QFT... :confused: I actually believe the exact opposite of Imminent though - DON'T do favours for family or friends, because they'll ride you for all you're worth and the continuous "free" updates will drive you mad.

I've seen that happen many times, especially if the people you are doing the favors for does not know all the effort that needs to go into it
