So my view of the ideal retirement changes but think I've realised community, including family, is important to me.
So before the money part, ideally I'd like to have the community and family part sorted. What I mean is, can I at least still be on OK terms with my children. Do I have that sense of community with the people that live around me.
Like a few years back, the thought of staying close to, or even with, my grown children, never crossed my mind.
But now, from what I see with people with this arrangement, it can actually work really well. So yeah while we'd like our kids to have every opportunity and do what they want to do in life, were it to happen that we're also not far from them, well that wouldn't be terrible.
Even the relationship part is tricky. Again I see too many couples, kids are grown and doing their own thing, they spent so much of their time focusing on the children they forget about their partner, now they're simply acquaintances they are pretty much tired of each other but it's too late/ costly to divorce so they exist together.
No idea what the future holds for wifey and me, I'd like to think when it's just us two we'll still be cool but that's why I think that community part is important; would we both have people outside our marriage we can interact with? It's why I say my view of retirement changes cos moving to that small town is all well and good, but if we move there, don't know anyone except each other and don't make that effort, well, that can be trouble.
Anyway, all of the above applies to any stage of life I reckon, but in your younger years you're so busy with stuff it can all get lost.

Agreed with the comments about staying healthy and staying sharp mentally.
 
Give me a pub like the one in Cheers. Does not have to make a lot of profit, just enough to sustain itself.
I think keeping other people happy will make me happy.

On a serious note. I have seen many people die within months, yes months not years of retiring. And these are people who retired comfortably.
My philosophy is, if you do not serve a purpose in life, you will be terminated.
So stay happy and make sure you deserve your place here.

Ja it's why I do agree with a previous poster about not waiting till retirement to do stuff you'd like to do.
But also just to know what you're doing in case you live for another 20/30 years after retirement.
And that adds to it all - I mean 30 years is a long time to plan for, and at the same time you can peg 3 years into it.
I'd rather the 30 years to be honest.

Stayed at a place in De Rust a couple of years ago owned by a Dutch couple and for reasons I can't remember (think it was a public holiday) every restaurant on the town was closed and so was pretty much every shop.

The owner offered to cook for us as we were the only residents at the time and it ended up being such a great way to get to know them and just hang out and experience their life.

I think that could be down to what type of person you are. There's a reason not everyone dies months within retirement.
 
Keep working, save up an obscene amount of cash, when ready to duck - take a bunch of fertility meds, get a stunning babe, pork her proper and unleash the curse that will be my offspring unto this world (and hopefully die shortly after).

I was a few years away from "retiring" and had multiple catastrophic life events which has pushed that back probably 10 years or so.
My plan was to finish raising my kids, study, improve my skills with musical instruments and play sports like golf, paddle and gym.
When kids went to varsity or moved on with their lives, I was hoping to be able to teach / lecture.

With this all being pushed back, I still think I can do these things, but the teaching / lecturing part might get a little more difficult.
If it is less likely, would probably move somewhere that the money goes further, weather is better and golf courses are nicer.
I had planned on 2 travel trips a year with family, but I am not that into travel and it was more for those around me and to spend time than actually see new places
 
stopped working in 2010, for the first ten years I was just absorbing knowledge, reading, going to classes, teaching some people that type of thing

recently in the past two years I've been working on introducing commodity money into communities, the past six months have been rather exciting in that regard, but still no tangible currency as yet

I thought they arrested you for those donations to Hamas? wasn't there something in the paper about some illegal Bitcoin donation...
FML imagine you as a teacher or trying to get a community around. I know you took a Hippocratic Oath but do you actually abide by it, hmmm we wonder. I think we all shudder to think what you would be teaching people, because sure as shite it would be anti-semitic <-- this obviously comes from your posts about the war.
