I can set this up on my wife's iPhone, the Android version doesn't have the option, I can only mute it. Any idea how I can achieve this? Are there 3rd party apps that can do this?

On Android, you can set a different notification for messages from groups, compared to messages from individuals. Unfortunately you can't set a custom tone for each group, just one tone for all groups. This is good enough for me. I set the group tone be a short beep, without a popup. For messages from individuals, I have a more prominent tone, with a popup notification. Some groups I'm part of have conversations the whole day and a short beep keeps the irritation levels low.

Ditto I but I belong to a number of neighbourhood watch groups, a couple are more important than the others in terms of notification and it irritates me that the more open, more flexible of the two major smartphone platforms has this oversight.

It's not a limitation of the platform. It's a limitation of Whatsapp. They chose not to implement the same feature set on both platforms.

Really sucks... I have the same issue.

My family have a BBM group. On Blackberry you can have different notifications for groups but on the Android app you have the same notification for groups and individuals.

I got tired of the constant group updates so I silenced the app, now my dad gets miffed when he BBM's me and I ignore.

I have tried to tell them to just Watsapp me but falling on deaf ears.

I can't believe they haven't addressed this issue yet. Really frustrating. Not all groups are created equal. Some I'd happily mute. Some I want to be as important as notifications from specific people.

Yip... it degrades the entire app, because now you have to either not be a part of any groups or mute the app.
