Big WhatsApp voice note changes

WhatsApp has started rolling out a host of new voice note features to its Android, iOS, browser, and desktop apps, including out-of-chat playback and draft previews.

In a blog post this week, WhatsApp said the feature was incredibly popular, with users sending an average of 7 billion voice messages per day.

“Showing emotion or excitement through voice is more natural than text, and in many situations, voice messages are the preferred form of communication on WhatsApp.”
It also allows for a lot more "So I was uhhh, umm, thinking that, uhhh, maybe, well actually we should possibly do a - oh, no sugar thanks - things ... what do you call it, when they put the donut at the top? Anyway, Kim thinks it would be better if Ryan sat this one out bec - no, black - where was I? Oh right the donuts ...."

Turning a thought out constructed text message I can read in 5 seconds into 2 minutes of a person blabbing on about things I don't care to hear about, and most likely can't listen to for the next 2 hours because I'm in a public place.

Allow me to block voice messages dammit!

You are so getting the wrong voice notes...

Media professionals have used this workaround to send photos and videos to avoid WhatsApp’s aggressive compression algorithms, which cause a significant reduction in quality to keep file sizes small.

^pitty this does not work on iOS ( no the workaround does not count - it does not work as it does on android )

I'm picturing someone sending a photo as a voice note in the form of an old dialup modem noise ...

Longer voice notes?

Just shoot me now.

Because it's not android? Sending files works just fine.

At least 6.9 billion of those voice messages have been sent to me by annoying people.

I want a feature where if somebody try to send me a voice message that it loudly plays a "f¢®€©€ off" on their speaker.

With the increase in file sizes we are going to get some of the worst audio autobiographical voice messages ever. " Hi, I was born in.." and then three hours later.. "... And I am going to be 5 minutes late to the meeting..." and then another three hours later ".. With spagetthi and meatballs.." and so on and so on.

I sincerely hope this is an April Fool's prank.

The last thing we need is longer voice notes

I wish I could disable Voice Notes as a global setting, then people couldn't send things to me that I'll never listen to.
This. Oh please this!

The amount of time I must spend telling people I did not listen to their voice note because I don't have the time nor am in a place where I can is infuriating.

Then you still get a reaction like you're the problem and their laziness is completely justified.

And 99% of the time it’s something that could have been said in a single sentence.

It seems daft considering how we've moved away from telephone conversations in favour of chat apps. To the point where some are weirded out when they get a call rather than a message.

What I have noticed is the type of people who favour voice notes are also the types who like to dominate a conversation, ie want to have say their say without interruption and perhaps like the sound of their own voices.

Yesterday I asked my wife where my office PC was since I was unable to connect to it (we don't live together).

She sent me a 2 minute voice note.

I guess I will have to go to my house myself to find out because I'm not going to listen!

They should be testing a system that zaps the mouth of anyone who tries to record a voice note longer than 5s. Or just anyone who records a voice note.

Who cares?! Give us proper multi-device support
