With more than 2 billion users, WhatsApp Messenger is the most popular chat app in the world.

A study published in the latest Social Media Landscape report by World Wide Worx and Ornico showed that over 93% of Internet users in South Africa between the ages of 16 and 64 use WhatsApp.

WhatsApp’s nearest rival in the mobile instant messaging space in South Africa is Telegram.

The statistics showed that Telegram is now used by 19.7% of South African social media users, receiving a boost from a controversial and misunderstood privacy policy change that threatened to cut WhatsApp users off if they do not agree to the new privacy policy.

Despite the backlash against WhatsApp’s ultimatum, the app remains popular.

Here are six important settings you should consider changing for a safer and more efficient WhatsApp experience.

until they find something to sell to a telemarketer, then I bet you'll wonder how they got that info from.
privacy is super important, just wait till you lose yours, all sorts of shady people coming to try sell you Viagra from Panama

Because you still need to protect yourself from a child at primary school stealing your phone, taking dick pics and sending it to his teacher.

Surely you understand this isn't all about your data, but also your own life.
 
As a platform, Telegram is by far superior. I love the fact that everything is cloud based and it really works seamlessly across devices. Whether that is a security risk, I don't know, but the experience is on point, especially groups.

Sadly, most people still use Whatsapp. :sick:

Personally when I get a number from someone &/or if I contact someone I haven't been in touch with recently, I'll see if they are on iMessage before messaging them on WhatsApp, if they are not on Telegram.

Problem is people will install another app (eg Telegram) because they are curious, which is good, but will not switch from Whatsapp, unless you first initiate a "Hello" and start chatting with them on it to change that habit.

What about FB Messenger? At 64.7% it kind of blows away Telegram measly pittance of 19.7%.

So, I send the dick pics to his teacher directly instead?

I'll try it. I dunno how that'll be better, but still.

Anything that overlays bubbles onto your UI doesn't count.

Jokes aside, there's definitely a definitional issue here that needs to be clarified. Facebook Messenger requires that you sign up for an account with a password. Like Skype or Google Chat.

WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal key off of your cellphone number, I would argue those are two different things, even if Telegram does blur the lines.
 
Just a note on the write-up.

In the section "Keep it secret, keep it safe" the incorrect image was used to illustrate the changes one can make.
I do hope that most readers do not require the image in order to make the changes, but looking at some of our readers' comments it may be required :ROFL: as it appears commons sense is not so common anymore...
