I'm moving over to a new phone, and my WhatsApp is backed up to Google Drive.
Every time I try restore it gets stuck on 99%/100%. My backup is 5GB big.

It seems like a common issue because there are a lot of articles about it:

Been battling now for a day, and the annoying thing is that whatsapp times out the number of times you can request authentication. So I have to wait hours between attempts.

Damn, looks like I finally got it fixed.
What a mission.

Steps were simple but getting the right order is important. If anyone ever has the same issue see the steps I took. Note that these steps are done AFTER you've already gotten stuck on 99%/100% of backup restore from Google Drive, since at this point pretty much all your data is on your phone again.:

  1. In your file explorer app on your phone, make a copy of the entire WhatsApp folder. Mine was at Internal Storage\Android\media\com.whatsapp. I copied this entire folder to a different location on my phone

  2. Next you need to disconnect your WA from Google Drive so that it doesn't try pull the backup from there again. Open your web browser from a computer and go to Google Drive. Click on Settings
Go to Manage Apps and search for WhatsApp Messenger. Click on Options > Disconnect from Drive.

  3. Now uninstall WA from your phone via play store, this will delete the com.whatsapp folder.

  4. Once uninstalled copy the com.whatsapp folder from where you made a copy of it back into the Internal Storage\Android\media\ path.

  5. Via play store reinstall WA. Open WA and you authenticate your mobile number again.

  6. It will now ask if you want to restore backups. Since your Google Drive is disconnected it will look at local backups. Follow whatever prompts to restore, it should be pretty quick since everything is local now

  7. Once done you can now go into your backup settings and setup backups to Google Drive again. It won't try restore anything from Google Drive - you're just configuring it for the next backup.

Crickey!
Have just bought a new phone so hope I don't go through the same, this weekend when I set it up.

Our G-Drive backup sizes are worlds apart, though - mine is only 12 MB (Megabytes), so perhaps that was the main reason for your issue ?
yeah yours should work

that thing where you can only authenticate a couple times before it locks you out for hours is soooo annoying

This is the method I use when the WhatsApp Backup doesn't work. But if your phone is broken you are screwed. Then I use the backup I made with the post I posted above.

Yeah, I think I should do my own sync to my gdrive. At least just the messages.
