At least telegram makes it clear, like google where the money is coming from.
Facebook should be like reddit, a massively used site that makes no money at all. yet somehow before the add revenue came in, facebook was profitable. HOW?

Google has served us adds from the beginning. even in gmail. its at the point where we hardly notice the adds anymore.
 
Why is everyone saying go to Telegram though? The article says the update will "allow" whatsapp users to share their data with FB, probably their own account. The allow makes it seems to opt in, not forced in and then opt out.

That said, time will tell how true that wording is.

Let's take creating a new account on a site.
The law says the little subscribe to newsletter button needs to be unticked so users do not unknowingly subscribe.
Think of the last few places you signed up for. Was that ticked or unticked?

Whatsapp says that the opt in will be off by default. But we all know it won't.

This is just the first step. From here there will be ads. And integrated whatsapp into Facebook messages.
Then the images you are sent will be shared to your time line.

Whatsapp users have been sharing their data on Facebook for over a year already without a lot of people noticing. In Dec 2014 I saw a few of my phone contacts (who I'd never spoken to on Whatsapp) appear on my FB as "Do you know these people". Aside: I deleted my FB account a month later and never looked back. People that want to stay in touch actually do.

Please tell you are don't believe what you wrote. I would not be surprised if FB is already using info from whatsapp.

Well I did say in my final line in that post time will tell how true it is. My Whatsapp havent used any info from my FB account yet. But, I also dont have my FB account connected on my phone, only use it from PC if I feel like it. Also dont put your cell# on your FB account...even if you hide it with privacy.

I am careful in how I use the Internet.

I generally do not connect to web sites from my own machine, aside from a few sites I have some special relationship with. I usually fetch web pages from other sites by sending mail to a program (see git://git.gnu.org/womb/hacks.git) that fetches them, much like wget, and then mails them back to me. Then I look at them using a web browser, unless it is easy to see the text in the HTML page directly. I usually try lynx first, then a graphical browser if the page needs it (using konqueror, which won't fetch from other sites in such a situation).

I occasionally also browse unrelated sites using IceCat via Tor. Except for rare cases, I do not identify myself to them. I think that is enough to prevent my browsing from being connected with me.

I removed every Google app from my Droid. FB gone. whattwat gone. FDroid welcome and Telegram. Adblock welcome.
Phone travelling at the speed of light now. Cynogen OS.
 
Not too worried about this, did away with FB
 
Well what did people expect from facebook buying whatsapp?
