WhatsApp violates privacy laws

It doesn't force anything of the sort. It allows the user the option to do so, or not use the flippen app altogether. I have many apps that have access to my address book. I explicitly allowed this, or removed the apps that I didn't trust with my info. That was my choice, not some bored politician's excessive nose-picking conclusion in Geneva...

Que? Mine asks (or have asked) for permission if I wanted to add my address book.

I declined, and only add pipple manually.

Somewhere, somebody's got nothing to do...

Must say that I agree with the article.

Every time I have tried to use whatsapp it asks for access to my entire address book, and if I decline terminates the app.

I got an invite to download the app because my son and my wife installed whatsapp on their devices and it therefore sent me an invite.

This is SPAM marketing in the highest degree.

I don't think it sends automatically.. basically if the user is not a whatsapp user it asks if you want to send an invite. Access to the address meh... neither here nor there.. pretty much like Andoid and iOS access entire address and a lot of the apps to oooooo

But the one thing i found interesting in article was the storage of user and non-user numbers. User ok... status updates but why non-users?

I agree with you 100%!!

@PeeVee...you're doing it wrong :D

Rather worrying about the storing of information. KDCom may want to show'em a thing or two about encryption eh.

Either way, warning those who use it is my first step incase things go south.

And family or friends wonder why someone calls on a PRIVATE NUMBER playing fools

Rather they import my Address book, than having to remember and give a ****ty BBM pin to everybody I want to talk to.

^ This.
I can't help but LOL at all the new BBM pin broadcasts from friends on social networks. Archaic.

I think you, like me, miss understood the intent of the case. They are not worried about you, who grants access, but all the people whose numbers are on your phone, who are not users of Whatsapp.

Still, I think it is a storm in a teacup.

The Dutch agency said it would continue to monitor WhatsApp and could impose penalties if privacy continued.
Looks like they're not gonna win either way :|

To get back to the topic, I'm sure all you mybb forum rangers are all right and have looked at this from all angles. Privacy protection authorities generally don't really bother investigating things like these right down to the bottom.

Didn't get it at first either, but I think they're saying when you sign up, it stores all your contacts, including those who have not signed up with Whatsapp, thereby violating their privacy.

In the News: Whatsapp is no longer available for people living in Canada and some parts of Europe.

For the rest, its life as normal :)

You have got to be seriously paranoid to think that WhatsApp is compromising your security. The fact that it uses phone numbers is what makes it so incredibly convenient, and by extension the fact that everyone has it, because it's so convenient.

I have never sent an invite to anyone after installing WhatsApp, and I have never received an invite from anyone to download WhatsApp. Blame your family for the spam. If you have a problem with WhatsApp accessing your contacts then don't install it.

Sir you are one of those people that jump to the incorect conclusions!
your son or wife were probaly the one that sent you the invite to install whatsapp.
As for acess to your phonebook, thats what whatsapp uses to check who on your phone book already has whatsapp so you can message them, again i say it doesnt send any invites the user is the one that does that - if that really were the case the few people i do know who dont have or dont want whatsapp would be complaining they were recieving invites
