WhatsApp voice versus normal mobile calls

WhatApp voice is just another voice product - like Skype, Hangouts, Vibre, Lync, etc (these even do Video).

Spent around 3 hours on whatsapp calling last night, Used a total of 6mb on whatsapp according to my phone

yeah I'm not sure I trust androids data usage report for Whatsapp when it comes to voice, I did a before and after and it was a matter of 1 or 2 kb - can't be true.
 
With all the wifi hotspots available I am sure these mobile networks must be worried, maybe they will drop the price, mmmm doubt it.

My friend just wait until this opens to everyone & then check stats agian, mobile calls will lose. I wonder what's the stats in SMS vs IM apps, anyone?

That's exactly how it works. The age of exponential year-on-year growth of high-margin voice revenue is over. Operators are first dropping prices due to the slowdown in new subscriber uptake and increased fight for the existing customers. This hits their margins, although it increases the voice traffic at the same time. Fortunately, operator hardware is also more cost-effective at handling extra calls.

Another trend is that as data speeds increase and prices come down, the quality of voip goes up, impact on the network is reduced, and calling costs come down.

Voip will continue to erode switched calls. It has for a long time, but I believe Whatsapp voice is a game changer due to the critical mass of users. They won't see it as a technology, but just a feature to enhance their daily contact with their whatsapp contacts.
 
I find the voip quality to be much better than what we get on the traditional voice calls. If enough of my contacts switch to whatsp voice i will most definitely use it more than switched voice calls
 
The voice quality is great. I do experience a delay like 90% of the time though, then I can hear myself speak while I'm speaking and I'm pretty sure I sound quite rude :p

I am sure it will improve, judging from skype, where they use High Def voice, the quality has improved as the bandwidth has improved and I'm sure they use fancy analytics to further engineer a better experience
 
Received a call from someone in the UK last night via whatsapp. They were at home connected to wifi, I was in the CBD connected to 3g. The call quality was better than most regular voice calls I've received from abroad. Very often with regular calls there's a slight delay, with the whatsapp call last night there was no noticeable delay. None at all. The quality was great.
