most of people had whatsapp before groups was even a thing- it was / is the sms replacement - if i have your number and you on whatsapp - i can sms you for R2 or whats app you for a fraction of that. which one would most people go for. hence majority of people are on it - what i am saying is telegram can all the features now - the fact that whatsapp is based on your phone number is the reason its usage is so high - downside or not.

telegram can also find contacts in your address book. just like whatsapp.
but you can add a contact who's number you do not have.

its a massive difference to what you are saying.

Telegram:
Not owned by Facebook.
If there was only one reason this would be it.
Whatsapp:
You can use it to tell people about Telegram.
At one time WhatsApp was removing url links to Telegram on purpose.

TELEGRAM FTW

Only downside is those contracts where WhatsApp is *free* (data cap applies). They don't cover telegram.

Whatsapp:
For:
- Most people I know use it, and are reluctant to switch to anything else.
- Some important groups I need to be on, are Whatsapp-based.

Against:
- Can't use Web without phone being on AND connected to the internet.
- Media downloads can fail repeatedly for some reason.

Telegram:
For:
- Can access Web without phone even being on.
- Like the way sticker suggestions are integrated with emojis.
- Media downloads never seem to fail on first try.
- Some other groups I know (Concerned Citizens, Municipal issues) are on Telegram.

Against:
- Not many people I know want to try it - got my wife and 1 colleague to go over, that's it.

When I have a choice, I always use Telegram, but 99% of people I know don't want to use it, and are sticking to Whatsapp.

and i don't think you get what i'm saying not punting either just giving the reason why whatsapp has a large user base already and why not many people have moved over fully to telegram- why would you move of something that's fulfilling the need already - and yes i know telegram has better features but why haven't many people moved off?

Yeah, like Facebook vs. Google Plus - when Google Plus came along, nobody was interested any more as it didn't bring with it anything significant over Facebook.

because everyone has this attitude "why do I need to move it does the same thing"

there is a world of difference, but people are afraid to change. and I am not saying you are afraid to change, I am saying all of your friends are afraid of change, because that is human.

instead of adapting to the better tech and moving away from the privacy violations, people persist.

and people even use whatsapp groups when it is the wrong tool for the job.
like for raid notifications in pokemon go. discord or telegram groups would be 100% better.
but people refuse to move over.
because "everyone is already on whatsapp"

not really a fair comparison.
plus offered no improvements.

telegram vs whatsapp is more mySpace vs facebook. but stubborn people are sticking to mySpace in this case.

It is a fair comparison, for the average user.

I am one of those people who moved to plus and abandoned FB.
plus did not offer an improvement.

telegram does offer lots of features as discussed in this thread over whatsapp.
the only reason the average user thinks it does not offer any additional value is because they do not know the difference and are araid to try something new.

The average user sends memes and texts over their phone, they don't need it for anything else. In that sense, it makes 0 difference to them. It's not easier or more difficult, or better or worse in either app for them to do either of these things.

For us the differences are obvious, because we do use the extended features.

I think there are more people in groups than you think.
the groups feature alone is enough reason to change over.

I get what you are saying, but at the same time, is it not the responsibility of the informed to share knowlage with the uninformed?

if one of your friends got an openweb account would you feel bad for not reccomending a better ISP?

so why no do the same in this case.

Whatsapp groups are again the same to the average user.

We are, but again, the average user doesn't see the use of the extra value Telegram brings.

I can bring the horse to the water, but sure as hell won't smash their face into the trough so that they drink it. Freedom of choice, and all that.

Remember, I am with you on this one, I am just giving you the reasons why Whatsapp vs. Telegram doesn't make a difference to many people's lives. Pretty much a case of whichever came first, being utilised more. People also don't like change. I am not one to judge.

more like it offered featured most did not use at the time, so most saw no benefit, when whatsapp instituted those similar features and more people started adopting it there would be no reason to go to telegram. the circle will continue - but all based on my initial assessment they got the base.
using the argument of Facebook vs mySpace vs G+ and how staying with old we should be on myspace still - - myspace failed because they failed to release new features and those they did were buggy and they did not allow 3rd party developers like facebook did - and finally relented but by then it was too late
Whatsapp may be lagging behind telegram but they are still constantly updating and improving -

I am with you.
I mean I have friends who despite being throttled up the wazoo are still on Mweb uncapped, no matter how much I try and convince them to move to ANY other ISP.

funny, those people also dont want to try out telegram.

Yeah. Nothing would make me happier than the day I can remove Whatsapp from my phone. But when I mentioned Telegram to our complex's management during the AGM a few years ago, they had these weird looks and weren't listening to a word I was saying coz they don't see the differences in terms of what the group gets used for. That's the only group I am still on it for at the moment, and to message my boss and colleagues since it's easier than the alternative(SMS).

yes, because in more than 4 years that I have been on telegram using gifs, all the whatsapp people refused to move.

again, its like using openweb or mweb and complainign about being throttled, but then when someone suggest you change ISP that thought is ludicrous because you are already on mweb.

remember, telegram is also releasing new features and always improving, and will alway be ahead of whatsapp.
whatsapp simply copies telegram features and gets an article on myBB.

telegram has those features for litrally years but no one was interested, now they are loosing their minds in order to use it on whatsapp.

And you wonder why people contact you every time a sex-relevant thread pops up... :D

no I never wonder.

the only weird one was when I was mentioned in the person selling the breast pump machine.
that confused me because it was just after the vasectomy
