BBM failed because they refused to make it compatible on any other OS than BlackBerry. Had they done that from the start, I'm sure that would be the IM of choice.
I'm doubtful of that. BBM is a really ugly IM and makes adding contacts very inconvenient. I was always glad that we moved away from it.
Yeah, we get it, you hate WhatsApp :crylaugh:
And I don't know a SINGLE person who has moved away from WhatsApp yet.
Just because someone gets on Telegram doesn't mean they've uninstalled WhatsApp. I keep WhatsApp installed for the few outlying friends and family I need it for.
Other than the fact the kids are all using whatsapp and think a Telegram is a piece of paper from the last century you might have a point

.
From my experience, kids much prefer Telegram when given the option. My youngest bro is much younger than me, and he and his friends have taken to Telegram like white on rice. His girlfriend is a bit younger than him, and she and her friends have done the same.
Telegram has way more chat functionality than WhatsApp. Stuff like auto-destruct chat, stickers, better GIF support, in-line music playback and SoundCloud ripping, being able to delete messages, the standalone desktop app etc have been very popular features from what I've heard.
Trying very hard to punt Telegram as the absolute cutting edge, miles ahead of the rest.
WhatsApp works perfectly fine. There is no benefit in installing Telegram. In fact, I might have 2 contacts whom I hardly ever contact anyway.
When I first started using Telegram I didn't have a single contact. Now I'm maybe 2 or 3 particularly important WhatsApp contacts away from being able to uninstall WhatsApp. It has been incredibly easy moving people across.
As for the benefits of being on Telegram:
- you can delete messages for everyone within 24 hours
- sticker support
- better GIF support
- huge number of very useful bots (eg GIF search, IMDB listings, image search, polls etc)
- no need to disclose number to add contacts
- groups hold up to 5000 people
- groups can be made publicly searchable
- huge files can be sent between contacts
- you can store notes and files by sending them to yourself
- proper standalone desktop app
- desktop and mobile apps support themes
- mobile app is noticeably snappier than WhatsApp
- Unlimited automatic backup of your messages in the cloud
- Ultra data efficient, especially with GIFs and videos
- You can reply to specific messages, forum style. Great in groups.
- Telegram is a non-profit. No big corporate machine owning it.
- You can pin chats to the top of your chat list.
- Secret chats with self-destructing messages.
Probably many other features I can't recall off the top of my head.
I have 240 contacts on my phone. About 80 of them are of any importance. About 50 of them use Telegram over WhatsApp to contact me. Only 1 insists on keeping WhatsApp, and, for this 1 person (who happens to be my boss), I have WhatsApp installed.
WhatsApp has some great features, like voice calling (nice is you have access to good data), but they are neglecting the input from users when it comes to essential features. This is where it counts. Number one on the list is being able to move the app to the SD card. Number two being a decent desktop app. Well my priority anyway.
So to those that say no one uses telegram, well at least 50 people and I use it. For the last year I have used it alongside WhatsApp and the last 6 month 98% Telegram only. I even started using Telegram to send files rather than email. Mostly via the desktop app.
As long as telegram stays true to their word about keeping the app free and ad free (and spam free) I will stick with them.
I've also got 99% of my contacts on Telegram now. It didn't even take much effort on my part - just a slight push in that direction tbh. Telegram's own strengths pulled people over.
Reasons are as above. Imo a far superior offering to WhatsApp. WhatsApp isn't even on my main homescreen anymore I use it so little.
