WhatsApp

so I take it you are a walk and chat kind of guy then? everyone person to be stuck behind in the mall.

or are you one of those oxegen waisters that chat while they are driving?

dont be daft man, we all know we spend most of the time we chat while sitting at our desks pretending to be working.

I don't work at a desk, can I have yours?

Yeah, we get it, you hate WhatsApp :crylaugh:

And I don't know a SINGLE person who has moved away from WhatsApp yet.

I am sorry you are old and your friends are even older, I know it is difficuilt keeping up wiht new technologies. I am sure you miss the days when people sat around talking rather than posting on social media, and I am sure you have never told any kids to get off your lawn:p

Other than the fact the kids are all using whatsapp and think a Telegram is a piece of paper from the last century you might have a point ;).

LOL, what has technology got to do with this? It's instant messengers.

kid follow the trends they are told to follow.
the key is p0rnz, just like with VHS vs Betamax, and DVD vs HD CD and streaming vs downloading, p0rnz leads the way.

and the youth of today are all aware that they might pull a MArgret, so when the kids start sending nudes, or buying drugs they will move to telegram.
and because they dont want their parents to know what they are up to they will keep the parents on whatsapp.

Trying very hard to punt Telegram as the absolute cutting edge, miles ahead of the rest.

WhatsApp works perfectly fine. There is no benefit in installing Telegram. In fact, I might have 2 contacts whom I hardly ever contact anyway.

I installed Telegram months ago and still only have about 5 contacts there. And one of them is Baxie :p

I have 240 contacts on my phone. About 80 of them are of any importance. About 50 of them use Telegram over WhatsApp to contact me. Only 1 insists on keeping WhatsApp, and, for this 1 person (who happens to be my boss), I have WhatsApp installed.

WhatsApp has some great features, like voice calling (nice is you have access to good data), but they are neglecting the input from users when it comes to essential features. This is where it counts. Number one on the list is being able to move the app to the SD card. Number two being a decent desktop app. Well my priority anyway.

So to those that say no one uses telegram, well at least 50 people and I use it. For the last year I have used it alongside WhatsApp and the last 6 month 98% Telegram only. I even started using Telegram to send files rather than email. Mostly via the desktop app.

As long as telegram stays true to their word about keeping the app free and ad free (and spam free) I will stick with them.

Hahah are you really trying to push the idea that WhatsApp is outdated, and Telegram is the new hip thing? :crylaugh:

BBM failed because they refused to make it compatible on any other OS than BlackBerry. Had they done that from the start, I'm sure that would be the IM of choice.

I'm doubtful of that. BBM is a really ugly IM and makes adding contacts very inconvenient. I was always glad that we moved away from it.

Just because someone gets on Telegram doesn't mean they've uninstalled WhatsApp. I keep WhatsApp installed for the few outlying friends and family I need it for.

From my experience, kids much prefer Telegram when given the option. My youngest bro is much younger than me, and he and his friends have taken to Telegram like white on rice. His girlfriend is a bit younger than him, and she and her friends have done the same.

Telegram has way more chat functionality than WhatsApp. Stuff like auto-destruct chat, stickers, better GIF support, in-line music playback and SoundCloud ripping, being able to delete messages, the standalone desktop app etc have been very popular features from what I've heard.

When I first started using Telegram I didn't have a single contact. Now I'm maybe 2 or 3 particularly important WhatsApp contacts away from being able to uninstall WhatsApp. It has been incredibly easy moving people across.

As for the benefits of being on Telegram:

- you can delete messages for everyone within 24 hours
- sticker support
- better GIF support
- huge number of very useful bots (eg GIF search, IMDB listings, image search, polls etc)
- no need to disclose number to add contacts
- groups hold up to 5000 people
- groups can be made publicly searchable
- huge files can be sent between contacts
- you can store notes and files by sending them to yourself
- proper standalone desktop app
- desktop and mobile apps support themes
- mobile app is noticeably snappier than WhatsApp
- Unlimited automatic backup of your messages in the cloud
- Ultra data efficient, especially with GIFs and videos
- You can reply to specific messages, forum style. Great in groups.
- Telegram is a non-profit. No big corporate machine owning it.
- You can pin chats to the top of your chat list.
- Secret chats with self-destructing messages.

Probably many other features I can't recall off the top of my head.

I've also got 99% of my contacts on Telegram now. It didn't even take much effort on my part - just a slight push in that direction tbh. Telegram's own strengths pulled people over.

Reasons are as above. Imo a far superior offering to WhatsApp. WhatsApp isn't even on my main homescreen anymore I use it so little.

now a few years later, the early adopters have moved away from whatsapp. #justsaying.

I would call myself an early adopter - WhatsApp was barely released when I got it. And I have absolutely no intention of leaving WhatsApp - it is simply the best form of communicating, and everyone I know is on it.

There's a big difference between best and most popular.

My post above outlines why I and many others feel that Telegram is a superior platform.

We are using Whatsapp for business, with about 5000 contacts. Will never change. It's pretty much a universal message service now.
It just works for us.

Wow. What industry is this? Not exactly professional.

What would make it a bit more professional?

Email. My family business is a top 20 Woolies supplier and we don't send instant messages to business partners and never have. Even within the company it's only arbitrary communication via IM - phone calls are used for noteworthy stuff and almost always followed up with emails (or, you know, talking in person). As for calendars, notes, files, meetings, deadlines, accounts etc. - we use collaborative software solutions like any professional business does.

Yeah, fair point.

Cell C gives me 1GB free WhatsApp data.

You mean this?

R12pm for 1.2GB of non-voice calling data?

It's certainly a good deal if you actually send and receive a gig of photos, but for the average Joe they're better off buying all-purpose data and using an extremely data efficient messenger like Telegram. I've sent long high quality GIFs to people over Telegram, and the resulting image is a few hundred KB. It isn't received as a GIF but a video file, although you'd have no idea unless you tried to save it. Whatever compression Telegram uses, it's pretty amazing. Same applies to photos - you have to deliberately send a photo at original resolution. Ordinarily they are compressed sensibly and use much less data.

And if you want to send and receive loads of high res images, Telegram is perfect for that. It uses cloud storage, so you can send the images at full resolution (i.e. as files and not pics) using either the web interface or the desktop app, and your phone will not waste data. By default, Telegram does not download files on mobile data. So neither you nor your recipients have to worry about losing mobile data - you can download the files at your leisure when you're at home or at work.
