WhatsApp

so that battery usage...

Already answered. If your screen-on time is considerable - with or without WhatsApp - your battery will get hammered.

Also, if you're receiving a large number of messages then your phone will wake each time, also hitting battery life.

There's a big difference between best and most popular.

My post above outlines why I and many others feel that Telegram is a superior platform.

Yes, there is a big difference, but opinion is entirely subjective. I have tried out Telegram, and I feel WhatsApp is both better and more popular. You may feel differently, and that is okay. I will stay with WhatsApp.

I assume you meant to claim that WhatsApp is better and more popular.

My point was that Telegram is objectively better at messaging, hence the long list of features that Telegram has and WhatsApp does not. And there are many, many more features I didn't list, like being able to send someone a link to a private or public group, proper organisation for multimedia and file history for groups, public channels that support 50000 people, being able to use the same Telegram account across all your devices (even if they don't have a sim card), being able to customise every aspect of your theme within the app and many more.

It's basically endless. Once you're used to Telegram it's impossible to enjoy WhatsApp. Which is probably why it took less than a year for almost all my friends and family to move over.

Oh that thing I installed then found it was useless cos I had no one to chat to

So move people over? I was the first of my friends and family to use Telegram, and now almost all of them are on it.

When a platform is clearly superior, it doesn't take much convincing for people to move over.

Except in my use case Telegram is not "clearly superior."

Flipping hell with WhatsApp e2e is on by default for everything. For Telegram you have to create a secret chat for it to be e2e.

So you're complaining that Telegram gives users the choice as to how they'd like to chat? You can choose the same seclusion as WhatsApp (secret chats can't be resumed on another device) or to chat in the cloud across devices. The fact that WhatsApp can effortlessly restore my chats every time I flash new firmware on my phone makes me seriously doubt their security.

Another consideration and something that really annoyed me was how Facebook is clearly sharing data from your WhatsApp activity with their Facebook platform. Twice now I've had a friend recommended to me on Facebook (building contractor and a person from Gumtree) shortly after adding and chatting to them in WhatsApp, with zero friends in common and no other links between us. That's f**ked up.

I'll trust the non-profit organisation over the biggest and most profitable social network on Earth thanks.

I am sorry you are old and your friends are even older, I know it is difficuilt keeping up wiht new technologies. I am sure you miss the days when people sat around talking rather than posting on social media, and I am sure you have never told any kids to get off your lawn:p

How's those Crocs treating you?

WhatsApp creates a database on your sd card and a backup everyday. If you move that sd card to a new device or wipe your phone, it just restores from the backup. If you delete a message a week after you received it, you have 6 backups of that message. How do you think they got all those WhatsApp chats for court cases?

I agree that telegram is a much better chat app. Maybe not as popular as WhatsApp, but popular doesn't make it better.

Yeah I'm aware of that. I don't have a problem with backing up WhatsApp chats, and I've configured Google Drive to backup online too. It's just super shady how you don't need a password or anything to restore chats.

According to many, true caller drains battery quite fast.

Thank you for this, my phone's battery had been running down like crazy over the last few days, and I just realized that I downloaded Truecaller. Very nice app, I will decide over the next few days whether or not to delete it.

Just let everyone in your contacts list know that you are making their details available to the world on the Trucaller website without their permission. Everyone can see what network they are on and the name associated with that number.

For example +27823711799 is listed as Jacob Zuma on Vodacom. And Trump is +19177568000 on Cingular.

Let them know that they can request their info be removed by going to http://www.truecaller.com/unlist

I never knew this...
