So I go to tiger wheel and tyre to check a tyre which I thought had a slow leak. When I get there, they discover the rim is slightly bucked and hence reason for pressure loss. They quoted R1500 for 1 rim straightening, or alternatively buy 4 new tyres and get it free for all the rims that may need straightening. I asked for a quote and said will be back next week when I have the time. I must add they mentioned that they take the rim away for 3 days for straightening.

Then one of the labourers said he'll sort the straightening out now since I will be back next week. He took the rim to a certain machine, used some pliers sort of thing and 'straightened' it. I obviously paid him something. Wasn't invoiced for it.

Now I want to know, what did he do? Was this the actual straightening? Why did they say they take it away somewhere else for 3 days?
Or is this a temporary fix? I really don't know if I should go back for all 4 new tires and have the straightening done now.

The certain machine - was it not the tyre removal machine? Just to hold it fast while he used the pliers?

Sounds like a temp fix to me but it might hold.

Do you need four new tyres? How much is that going to set you back?

Yeah possibly that. I didn't walk right to the back but looked the same.

Sorry forgot to add the quote for all four tyres R3500 hankook inc alignment and balancing. Not needed right now but do have flat spots since I bought the car. Does make a noise but thread still fine.
If its temporary, the actual proper straightening entails what?

I'd replace all tyres then.

Flat spots too? That's not normal wear and indicative of worn shocks / suspension issues. You might want to get your suspension checked.

He conned you that’s what he did.

Rim was probably never buckled in the first place.

They love to pull this trick showing you the balancing machine and what the numbers are and what they should be. Nobody asks twice as what do they know about balancing machines.

Then the con comes out how they can straighten it for cheap or they’ll swop the rim for you. (By walking around the back with your rim and coming out the other side with the same one).

Then they stick on it move the balancing weight like they should have and ta da magically straightened.

Never go back to this shop again.

The tyre places call everything a flat spot. Even sawtooth wear which is quite normal on the rear wheels of an fwd car with time

It was bent, that I could see and also the unexplained pressure loss. But you're right regarding balancing and other stuff including shocks etc.

Tbh I always get a second opinion on any vehicle work. Hence the reason I didn't jump and buy all 4 new tires immediately. I just don't know what straigtheining he did if initially they said it needs to go for 3 days, and if this is a temporary fix. Also don't know to what extent it was bent. See image. Looked very similar to this and similar extent, maybe even less. So the lip part is now straightened but I don't know if it needs more straightening on the inside.bent%20wheel.jpeg

Oh right that is a proper bend that would break the bead so explains why it would leak.

He probably just bent that section on the lip back in place and that would stop the leak and odds are the rest of the rim is actually fine if balances properly.

When they send it away it goes to a proper specialist with proper jig and tools to correct it. You could probably get away much cheaper just going direct to those guys. Do a Google for rim repair.

What car by the way?

Ford fiesta. Apparently has very crap rims and buckles easily, said by same guy. Also showed me another ford rim that bucked terribly.

If it's balanced on the machine then it's fixed. No need to repair the wheel.

Flat spots on a tyre is evident of a maniac driver , I know cos I always create flat spots on my front front tyres that spin on pull off.
