When all Telkom users will be able to roam on Vodacom

In November 2018, Vodacom and Telkom announced a major roaming agreement which would allow Telkom customers to roam on Vodacom’s LTE network.

The companies said the roaming agreement would be in full effect from June 2019 and Telkom stated it would begin conducting a phased transition beginning from 1 December 2018.

These deals give a pretty good hint that these guys could pool together their resources to build networks and then compete in services like the government suggested. They complain about network infrastructure costs all the time too, go figure.

@Bradley Prior - please can we have a follow up article with some tests. So far I have established:
  • Towers where there is existing Telkom LTE coverage have not been enabled
  • Telkom only bundles do not work on Vodacom roaming.
  • Uncapped does not work on Vodacom.
  • Does not work on 2300mhz
  • The Telkom-SA R code is 65505 and is not the same as Telkom which is 65502.
  • Seems like the best way to benefit is to select the "choose network automatically" and "prefer 4G/LTE then your device will select Telkom 4G when available or Vodacom roaming when no Telkom 4G available.
  • Forcing to Telkom-SA R or 65505 will lead to no signal when in areas with Telkom LTE coverage.

Did these dudes not have some sort of DIVORCE some time ago ?
WHAT is THIS now ?
Kiss and make up ?

Vodacom / Vodafone to yank the Telkom acorns out of the fire .........
Problem is the sinking Telkom will drag the PRIVATE operators down as well !

This ... I have Telkom and currently cannot roam on MTN .. is this going to be an improvement for me ? my Freeme only works on Telkom .. definitely not on any roaming agreement ..

Never mind this, when will Cell C users be able to roam on MTN?

Cell C left Vodacom and signed with MTN for roaming, MTN wouldn't give Telkom 4G roaming, Vodacom did (or at least for a better price).

This seamless roaming is killing me. My router always switch to best network which is Telkomsa-R (vodacom). The moment it happen I lose Internet connection. Even though network search mode is set to manual. Telkom smart broadband data do not roam on vodacom.

FreeMe definitely works on MTN.
I can tell you as I sit here now .. my data does not work, if I am not connected to Telkom .. if my phone shows Telkom SA .. i get data .. if it switches to Telkom SA/ MTN ... I have zero connectivity .. phone calls yes .. data .. no

If this is not supposed to happen .. then I need to do something .. I just assumed that was how it worked

Under settings on your phone you need to enable data roaming.

wow .. I've been living with sub standard data for months now after switching from MTN .. thanks for that.. I assume I need to be careful of that setting when travelling abroad and remember to turn it off .. otherwise I can imagine the awesome charge .. I just assumed the roaming would incur charges, so I left it off ..

You'll have to send an SMS to roam if I remember correctly, e.g. My roaming does not actually connect when I go to Europe.

You need to opt in.

Thanks. I gather, it may be a seamless roaming, but not a transparent like Vodacom on Rain. Your SIM card has no 65505 defined as a home network, so you have to enable roaming on the phone. Don't expect any changes comparing to the current MTN roaming, except it will work on LTE too. Voice, SMS and all networks bundle will roam on 65505, while Telkom-only bundles will not give a throughput. Smart Broadband or unlimited users should better lock their routers on 65502 network.

I have noticed a discrimination in Telkom. I have been with Telkom for years now. Can someone please tell me why Telkom in roaming always Telkom Data bundles is not working only All net bundle works. I was roaming on MTN now on TelkomSA-R both not working. It’s looks like Telkom is punishing us by not connecting to Telkom site. Mo’nice shows good stuff but we can’t them cause we roaming.

I was very excited when Telkom joined vodacom cause I thought finally will have data bundle that were meant for VIPs “those connected directly to Telkom “ but now I’m soooooooooo disappointed to find that its the same girl I had before wearing a New

When you buy a bundle its pretty clear, that the telkom bundles only work on telkom towers, where as all-net is meant for all networks (telkom+mtn or future telkom+vodacom) towers.
