Does anyone know when or if the hard drive prices are going to fall back to the "pre-flood" prices?

That's like saying "When will the petrol Price fall again"?

When companies get used to making more money, why on earth would they revert back to a year ago?
It's simple business and economics...

Methinks it's not the manufacturers fleecing us, it's the supply chain.

bloody bunch of pessimists

HDD prices have already started dropping

+1
Hard drives are lower now than they were six months ago and will continue to drop we just got our WD range in today will do specials on them for the weekend once the branches got stocks- However the Rand/Dollar is playing a bit of havoc on pricing at the moment as they could have been much lower.

Unfortunately the pessimism is warranted in this case. Supply has been restored (since April) yet prices are still high. Hell Seagate even managed to record a record profit.

There are many threads on this topic. They've just gone up again recently due to the R/$ exchange. I highly doubt they will ever drop to pre-flood levels.

In dollar terms when the Chinese yuan strengthens and our rand weakens we pretty much fukked with imports.
Rand»dollar»yuan = 30% loss in currency or there about.

I've been in the industry for decades, and prices have barely changed in 30 years.

A top-end HDD in 1983 was about R4000. Today, a top-end HDD is much the same.

Ditto with PCs, as per Jerry Pournelle's Rule of Thumb in Byte Magazine.

Speeds, feeds and capacities have evolved somewhat, it must be acknowledged.

(Yes, I know about inflation, etc. But it's interesting nevertheless.)

i guess when hdd like 250gig and 500gig get phazed out with bigger drives 3-4tb we might see pre flood prices on the low end drives
