When can we expect a price drop from iBurst?

Its up to the market.

The only way iBurst will come down in price is when the other players lower their prices and the market forces them to do so.

I recently got iBurst because Sentech doesn't have a tower overlooking my valley and I did not want to deal with VC/MTN or suffer the aggro of getting Telkom to install ADSL. So far so good. Having bought an expensive modem I am now locked in.

Less money/more speed/bigger cap all works for me.

But how big is that, like almost a gig?
Id just never waste my bandwidth on 3D Mark when you can buy a mag for like R25 and get it free with a bunch of stuff...

Well thats the thing, we shoudl have to think about it and plan our internet, bigger cap.

My thoughts exactly. Iburst still offers good value for money (relatively, of course). But sooner or later they are going to have to increase the value or reduce the money.

Caps doubled, or speed doubled? I'd go for caps.

I don't think a higher throttle speed would be to Iburstgroup's liking. It would a more sensible idea to reduce additional bandwidth costs so they are more in line with ADSL (ie +-R60/Gb)

I think a speed increase is going to require rolling out new UTD/UTC/UTUs. That might be costly, especially if they decide to follow Vodacom's example and swap out for free.

So I think the most cost effective response to competition (from Iburst's point of view) is increasing the caps.

But before any of that happens, something really major has to happen on the SA broadband front (like Telkom being stripped of SAT-3 or ADSL line rentals being abolished).
 
hmm, like I always say htough, the increase of caps doesnt attract nearly as many customers as a speed increase does. Caps attracts us downloaders and IT people, but the majority of hte market dont go over the cap and just thiunk higher speed at a reasonable price compared to ADSL is better.

Many of the downloaders are already on Iburst, so personalyy I think they wil be more likely to increase speeds, but i would also prefer cap.

They only post when they deem it to be necessary i.e. when they roll out more base stations, have a new value (sic) added service etc.

They don't give a toss what we as consumers want and as such I will be very surprised if they have even taken note of what has been discussed here.

As with virtually every other comany in SA they give us what they say we want, never what we actually want and need.
 
I won't mind if they kept the pricing the same but upped the speend to say 2mb as well as doubling the cap :D
 
I think South Africa is the only country in the world where the companies decide what the people want - and get away with it.

It makes me sick and want to pack my bags.

Here's another one:
BMW 330i price in RSA: R346500=$51949 (at today's exchange rate)
BMW 330i price in USA: $36995

They are all built in Rosslyn, RSA. Go figure...:mad:

But then that price is shocking, how can there be a difference in price, besides the car delears in USA having a bigger market and the fact that there are no shipping costs invloved for SA!
Prices should be at least close to equal.
 
hehe, that is the problem, we all still use the products...

Be it cars or telephones or internet, we are so completely dependant on the technology that we are willing to pay any price to get it. We cant live without cars, because there is no public transport, so car manufacturers get away with charging whatever prices they all collude on.

And a very similar story occurs with telephones and internet. We cant live without them, so we end up paying out of our a$$...
 
hmm.. but what to do about it? I geuss something like Iburst is a start, the further away from the mainstream you go the better, but you get screwed even over here. At least it makes competition. Iburst is growing and investing alot of money, it must be having some kind of effect at telkom, i mean the y announced another price cuut for sometime soonigh already.

then if people leave iburst, iburst will jack up their service and so it goes.

Information on where those 42 000 cars go is a little hard to come by. With the US of A being the biggest market, a good number of them probably end up there.

A brand new 330i for R246756? It seems about as likely as uncapped ADSL. It's not just Telkom ripping us off,

Because this racket is actually protected by the SA government via the MIDP
 
I was planning to go over to iBurst, but after taking a long, hard look at our finances and budget, we decided not to, and to wait a bit before committing ourselves.

Too much debt anyway... :mad: but if I was able to do so, I would go over like a flash... now that I know that I've got a good signal, there's no stopping me as soon as our budget will allow for this.
 
To be honest. Looking at a 192K HomeDSL and a R100 3Gb account from cybersmart = R370 per month, excluding the telephone line (ADSL Line and ISP Account).

Half the price of 3Gb iBurst on 24 month contract. Then get a 2gb Openweb account with openproxy if I need extra bandwidth.
Plenty of bandwidth for me.

If wbs had a 64Kbit/s uncapped package. I'd get that instead.
 
Well 1gig at R479 pm is 64kb uncapped with a extra gig at 1mp/s. And then your uncapped speed is very reiable and over 64kb most of the time. Plus its unshaped?? What the problem?

Compared to 192kb with only 3 gigs for R100 less (actually pretty much equal because of the R90 phone charge) So Id say the 1gig Iburst kills that solution.

Plus Iburst has much better helpdek these days Id say much easier to get help than with ADSL, and you can get it delivered in one day and the setup costs are alot lower these days. Oh and mobility can be nice, especially if you go travelling or are just going to a friends place pretty much anywhere in JHB.
