I think we want to know if THIS will be network locked. ;) We don't want to buy them and find out we can't insert another sim card. When I'm buying this I want a guarantee on paper that it will work on all the networks and if it doesn't I'm taking it back.

And isn't it illegal to lock equipment? I don't see why Vodacom should lock cards anyway. If they are scarce then they should also be scarce for MTN, Cell-C and Virgin and I don't see them locking anything on purpose. The use on Vodafone networks is just an excuse to lock customers in. Cards are available on all the networks and should work on all of them. The price asked for these cards doesn't make them Vodacom's property. It's the same as buying a sony-music cd at a shop and then finding out it doesn't work is your jvc. Completely unacceptable.
 
Vodashop says it's around R2,700. Is that correct? You can get 3G phones for a lot cheaper. Is this because it's HSDPA?
 
Been testing the Huawei E220 USB modem for a few days.

- Great looking device, got that Apple look about it so will get the nod from the Mac community. (snobs! :) )
- Supports up to 3.6Mb/s
- Uses it's own dash at the moment. Vodafone dash on it's way.
- Not supported on Intel Mac yet, on it's way.
- No external aerial socket.

Outside of the normal applications, it's a very good option for desktop installations as it should remove all the driver / compatibility issues with the PCMCIA adaptors. You can also mount it away from the PC (and thus less interference) using a USB cable.

Does anyone know which service provider I can contact to get an E220 modem/contract? Neither Autopage nor VodacomDirect can help me yet, and my local Vodashop salesperson thinks I'm hallucinating.

Went to the 3G Vodashop and got an E220, the guys told me it supported Macbook Intel (even after I asked them if they were sure if it supports Intel Mac..."yeah software available on web..no problem" I quote) Of course its not! Anyway, V3G, any idea when the mac intel software will be available ?

If I remember correctly I asked you to move this thread into the Vodacom forum so it would get more exposure. My question was actually device specific and relating to the E220 software. For some reason there doesn't seem to be a way to send service requests. I can send SMS but not service requests? Maybe a hyper terminal option somewhere, anyone? :)

Neither actually. I'm using Vodacom hsdpa at Virgin rates, paid R3.22 for 7.5MB. Just reconnected at 3.6Mbps. Don't know if it's a lapse in security or Cell C testing the Vodacom UMTS network but it rocks.

Getting a bit slow now, will do test after midnight.
