when do you use noise reduction?

This may differ from camera to camera. On the 40D, long exposure NR is applied to the RAW, but high ISO NR is applied only to JPEG.

You sure about that? I shoot RAW and used this setting when taking pics of the night sky and it made a huge difference.

Why are you shooting high ISO images? Surely the long exposure means you can shoot lower ISOs?

Higher ISO shows you things in the sky that lower ISOs can't and since I'm using very short exposures (3 seconds) because I don't have auto-tracking, it makes a big difference. Without auto-tracking, the objects move out of focus and the resulting images are a bit blurry. That's why I can only use 3 seconds. Otherwise I could happily use ISO800 if I had really long exposures. ATM higher ISO shows you colours that you can't see at ISO800. Even between ISO1600 and ISO3200 there is a difference.

Ok - I thought you did.

How do you get auto-tracking?

On a Dob? It's a tricky situation. I'm still trying to figure it all out. We need some kind of wedge/mount and then we need a device that can autotrack. Kalvaer posted a link in the other thread (astrophotography).
