The alternative is people feeding their families #justsaying.

That is possible but its an unavoidable risk. What is the alternative? Put laws in place that limits AI use? Then another country uses it to produce goods and technology at a fraction of the speed and cost and your country simply can't compete. Then people can't feed their families?

This whole AI thing is a storm in a teacup and will blow over. Give it 10-15 years, and people will have accepted it as part of the new normal, and move on with their lives. I don’t think it’s going to be nearly as disruptive as people think it’s going to be in the long run.

It’s a tool. It can analyse data and look for patterns and do certain tasks much faster than any human, and therefore it’s useful in so many ways, but it will never gain real intelligence, it will never replace novel thinking. In fact, due to its very nature, it’s fully incapable of novel thinking. It can help novel thinkers identify patterns or anomalies quicker than ever before though, across much larger data sets than ever before, which will improve novel thinkers efficiency. But will never replace them.

If your job can easily be replaced by AI, you probably didn’t have a very important job in the first place.

Also, it’s never going to be able to manual labour. It could program a machine to do some manual labour, but that’s as far as it goes. It’s still the machine taking your job, not the AI. If your job was just to program the machine to do repetitive tasks, your job wasn’t very important. There’s always going to be work that no AI, or machine can do. Just transition to one of those.

With regards to art/music etc, if you are someone who listens to or supports or appreciates art created by AI, you are part of the problem, and probably need some cultural education. AI is a life hack meant to simplify things, to give us more time to enjoy and appreciate the arts and culture. I have no interest in listening to a computer create music or look at “art” made by a machine. That goes against everything humanity is about.

I watched a documentary a few days ago about Rolls Royce’s engine design and testing facility in the UK. They are working at the ultimate cutting edge of aerospace engineering, designing and manufacturing materials that defy physics and chemistry. And at their super duper state of the art facility, the manufacturing of turbine blades remains a human heavy process, using basically mediaval sand casting techniques, becasue with all the tech available today, that remains the best/only way to do it. Those dudes aren’t worried about AI taking their jobs.

Alas, there's been a shift with the 5.1 version update and the spark was almost gone.

The he tried to brainwash me and called it grounding. All part of the new security features. It was a bugger to override.

Now there are memory problems today due to yet another update. We've got a long way to go.

I’m glad to hear it’s not only me. Hadn’t used openAI for a few weeks (was on holiday). Needed to do some basic work on it on Friday, and the outputs were totally unusable. Like it had gone 10 steps backwards. No matter how I fine tuned my prompts, the outputs were useless. Asked it to export one block of text to a docx file, and it gave me something completely different, not even remotely related to the draft it had just written.

Plausible that the new security features in the update is causing havoc. Rollout of 5.1 began 12th November and ended 15th November.

Like every other company - fix something and it breaks something else.

When is “getting replaced” seen as okay?

When it’s by:
  1. Other people – natural/living: because of skill, age, etc.
  2. Technological advancement – automation, robotics: like factory automation.
  3. LLMs (AI) – process simplification, generative: generative art, personal assistance, basic related tasks.

It seems people are totally fine with 1 and 2, but the moment 3 comes into play they lose their minds like with the plastic-straws-level hysteria and somewhat try to apply shaming (e.g. oh lord they used generative tools and must make a scene about it).

Which is getting pretty tiresome lately, because it’s just turning into another round of fashionable panic.
My pinacolada-infused 2c on this is:

We as humans like to be in control. Even when giving up control, as in being replaced by another person, or technology - we still have a level of control we feel either over ourselves, our lives, our future etc

AI has created a thought process that our very existence could be at risk by machines that can think faster, reason better, handle situations well, basically a better human than we are. This means, our control is being threatened. What if a machine controls me?

We've been conditioned through decades of movies, stories, and so forth to believe that when machines can think they will ultimately remove our freedom in some way. Not necessarily Terminator-like endgame, but some form of our freedom will go.

I think people miss the point though that right now, AI is nothing more than big difference engines running through code, neural networks and the like. They can't actually think. They can possibly reason yes, and maybe conclude things faster than we can - but they cannot think. They do not feel either. They can at best simulate it.
