I remind myself of the following quote :

Are you righteous? Kind? Does your confidence lie in this? Are you loved by all? Know that I was, too. Do you imagine your suffering will be any less because you loved goodness and truth?

For me above-mentioned quote means that suffering is unavoidable , even though you adhered to a life of virtue and honour.

Thus one should not expect to receive kindness and goodness - even if you make it a clear cut principle to live by.

Welllll.... last week Wednesday we stopped at my mom's place and saw two of my son's friends searching around desperately. Wife asked them what was wrong and they said that they had lost R100 of their mother's change and had been tracing their steps and looking everywhere for it. This family cannot afford to lose any amount of money right now. The kids were frantic and in tears and I knew their search was hopeless (amongst others the PE wind was pumping). I slipped my my a R100 note and she gave it to them. It was worth it to see the relief on their faces.

Fast forward to Sunday and my wife and I shoot out to do some quick, last minute shopping. Park in a fairly deserted parking lot, get out lock car and, as is my habit, I walk around the front of the car to open the door for my wife and what do I find... R500 in the little flower bed in front of the car!!!! We looked around to see if anyone was looking for it and I left my details with the store manager, but so far no-one has claimed it.

So I don't fully agree with the OP.

I also gave R20 away once, to someone that really needed it. The next day I got promoted at work, had my salary increased, heard that my bond application was approved, my credit card limit was increased and I won a competition! Not only that, my brother picked up a new chick, my aunt found some money just lying there on the pavement and my son got back at the bully at school.

Isn't it incredible how all these events spawned from me just giving away R20?

Coincidence? I think not!

/Really now. Pffft.

You didn't get laid ? Bummer :( :wtf:

it's our minds that make connections and congratulate ourselves on our rewards. we could get promoted because we work hard, a bond because we're money smart and win a competition because nobody knows how to SMS "heinz winkler" to the correct number :D i'm at the hopeless nihilistic stage of my life that while i have great things and i am grateful for all the love and luck i have in my life, i realise that things are on their own and that there isn't some hidden force dishing out overtime and bonuses.

now, from a ZEN perspective, there is a great quote that says "Anger ruins joy, steals the goodness of my mind, forces my mouth to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind. Leads to a mind without regrets. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone." how we want to be will affect how the world will see us :)

The OPs is from The Thin Red Line and smalltownskys is from the TV series Life for what its worth.

Dunno why you're quoting script writers thoughts at each other. :p

The truth is if you're nice and life and people are still stomping on your head then you probably have assertiveness issues.

There's nothing noble about smiling sweetly while a bully kicks you in the nuts.

the original quote is from Alan Watts, and the original idea is from Suzuki.
wisdom is wisdom no matter how many words or what order they're in :p

also you must be careful to not become a bully just because the world is trying to make you a certain way. i experience it every morning in joburg traffic after all :)

As in a R500 note? Or five R100 notes next to each other just waiting for the right person to find it?

How does accepting the fact that shyte happens make the suffering any better? That's retarded... It's like saying "ok, I accept that I'm going to prison... but on the bright side...", or accepting that you in deep financial debt, how is accepting that you're in deep financial dept meant to make you feel any better? Yes, no matter how awesome, righteous, good to 'god' you are, you will always hit moments of where things seem dull, but accepting it should be an instantaneous reaction... however, fixing the problem should be your goal, and trying to make yourself feel better isn't fixing the problem
