When to start grade R

That is very weird, because my son, and most of his friends are turning 7 in Grade 1..

Government school
That is a minimum age criteria for entry so that should be fine.

"An applicant for Grade One must be at least five years old and turn six or older by 30 June the next year."

Then it looks like the feeder Grade 0 school is setting this criteria (within the law), that's why they are all turning 7

OP so there's no right or wrong answer we can give, entirely depends on your children and your circumstances.
Are they in some sort of school/ creche now? If so how are they coping? Any concerns from yourselves, teachers there?
Chat to teachers, chat to the school where you're thinking of enrolling them.
So if it were me and there were no obvious shortcomings I'd send them.

I don't think one year +- really makes any difference and I am fairly certain progress (or otherwise) depends on child & school etc.

Hi Sepeng, my twins are in a creche at the moment. The owner of the creche suggested that we send them to grade R a year later than they were meant to go but we decided to keep them on track for now. At the end of grade R they will be assessed to see if they are ready for grade 1 and we'll take it from there

For us as fully grown adults one year is nothing, but when you're 5 or 6 years old it's 20% of your life. You're forgetting the younger you are, the bigger those events are. That's why for us it seems like 2020 and 2021 zipped by, as they are but a small %

So I think the tricky part is, often times as parents we make decisions based on our fears or aspirations and not what's the best for the kids. So as long as your motivations are based on what you think is best for them and not what your friends or folks or random strangers on the internet might think you're good to go. Good luck either way.

This is interesting. It looks like one school is asking for a readiness certificate from a educational psychologist to indicate Grade R readiness for our 5 year old (nearly 5). Currently, if a child is turning 5 year old in the academic year, then it is Grade 00, 6 year for Grade R and 7 year old for Grade 1.

Anyone here that submitted such certificate?

My twins turn 5 on the 22nd of December 2022. Do I have to enroll them in grade R next year or can I wait till 2024? I feel that they will be considerably younger than a lot of kids in their class and might be disadvantaged because of this.
Did you decide about this yet? :)

We're going to send them to grade R the year that they turn six. They will probably be the youngest in their class. Hopefully all is well but if the grade R teacher suggests it we'll let them repeat grade R

Who decided that all kids should be put in the sake box?

Society is sick.

Don't let The Box hold your kids back. There will be enough other things constantly trying to do that.

Age doesn't determine level of intelligence or social skills... Hence why u get 16 year old kids out shining 18yo's in matric. Like you see in this thread.

I believe we shouldnt need 12 years to get to a matric level of education. So send them earlier and if they can't cope they can be held back without issue.

Based on our visits to private schools and talking with lot of colleagues, it is beyond doubt that private schools do it to get 1 year fees from parents. Age 5 and turning 6 next year for grade 1 with public schools is very very common but hardly common in private schools.

Greed. Basically.

From around July to Sep birthdays parents send the kids to Grade 1 the year they turn 7. It's straight forward.
It's only after this where it becomes an issue but then again what difference will a few months make?
Kid will be 6 for 11 months and then be the last to turn 7 a few months after everyone else. No biggie.

In 5 private schools we asked around, there are no exceptions. Grade 00 if turning age 5 that year, Grade R if age 6 and Grade 1 if age 7. So, 1 January 2017 born kid goes to Grade 00 and so does 31 December 2017 born.

I suspect parents don't have the backbone to stand up to school and do assessments they ask for.

It's a rule they can control otherwise parents will a smart ass 5y old will demand he gets in early causing issues with other parents.

They would like you to think it is a rule but it is just a guideline they follow. I will let you know in 2 weeks time how it goes.

A note. First teachers/admin staff usually point at height of other pupils and then when you point out other 30% of pupils in the same class that they conveniently forgot to point out, then comes the "emotional" card - "Oh, it is not only about height but also about emotional well-being of kid"
