When to start grade R

Update. 2 schools did a lot of brouhaha about psychologist assessment and when we asked for names to book appointment, they backed down and did some in-house assessments and gave ok. We selected one and happy with the choice for now. Not surprisingly, other kids seem a bit taller on average as he is possibly 1+ year younger but he seems to have adjusted fine as per teacher.

Lesson learnt: If you are confident about your child, there is no issue. As per feedback from other colleagues, all schools do this as tactic but they will back out if you insist.

Dunno.

I was in grade one when I was not even 6.

I got ****ed up solidly. It was a long ride back to somewhere close to where my peers are.

Everyone is different I guess, but also, little people are fragile.

My birthday is in December, so I was basically anywhere from 6 months to almost a year younger then my peers, I mean thankfully I am also tall so never had anyone try their luck, well anyone in a grade or 2 passed me, of course older kids would try.
Now my son when he was younger in grade r they kept him back as he was "struggling" turns out he has ADHD and needed glasses, which the new school picked up when he went in Grade 2. So sometimes schools suck

Was it because of bullying? Maybe in "those" times, bullying was rife? It is really taken very seriously, from what I heard from other parents.

I still think you guys are describing scenario over 20/30 years ago. These days, there is zero tolerance over bullying. Of course, it happens but corrective action is taken. I can't say for sure for ALL schools but am fairly certain about 4-5 schools nearby us based on parents I have met.

It's 'taken' seriously, like it was back in the day. As in they talk the talk but when it boils down it doesn't really result in much.
Sometimes it becomes a he said she said, government schools are the worst though.

As I said, bullying is bound to happen as some kids will take chance. I can only guess that private school reputation is at stake so this is really taken very seriously. I don't know about government schools.

Not even in private schools is it really enforced. Kids are cruel and bullying will happen, sadly. I mean at my sons dojo one of the kids got into serious trouble as he ended up using his karate on a kid and he was in a private school, he did it because the school was "tough" on bullying but didn't do anything when he kept saying the other kid was bullying him.

There is about as much zero tolerance for bullying as there is for anything in SA. I've seen private schools, government schools they are big on the talk of no bullying but it happens and because the schools put the facade of the no bullying sometimes it can actually be harsher and often the school can make it worse.
Even when I was in school there was zero tolerance for bullying, but it still happened.

I disagree. My 14 year old son was at a government school for the year before the great crackdown.

There were literally 5 white kids in the school. He was horribly abused and not one teacher did a thing.

Oh he was one of the 5 whites.

Yup strangely enough the situations I've seen, can't be spoken of cause you know. Teachers don't do much, even in private schools.
 
Though to be fair, it started happening in the 90s already when I was in school. Certain groups would form and start trouble with other groups, its like what the hell guys we're in school, take this BS somewhere else.

Are you sure it's because of race?

Unfortunately kids and teenagers can be assholes. I was bullied as a kid quite heavily by both black and white kids but it was mostly because I was different and very soft which makes you easy prey in high school.

It's generally about racism, most of the white kids in government schools go through it. But hey it's not racism cause it's blacks doing it.

Well, lots of black kids in ex model c schools and who schooled with white kids can say the same and I'm pretty sure you will deny racism has a role there.

Unfortunately as I said before, high school is a very judgemental environment and I'm not sure the white guys who are popular go through it.
