When we were in varsity?!

Drove one like this, but only from my 2nd year which was 1985. It cost R2700 and I later sold it for R5500...LOL!

same here, drove a box shape sentra.
would have never dreamed to drive a lambo to college, unless you had just won the lotto.

That's just the thing, there was no lotto when I was at Varsity

I went to a private college in 2011 and the cars there were run of the mill. There were a couple of corrolla's, a RunX 180i which was quite well kept, a Chery QQ 3 that sounded like a stuck pig and I drove a 1972 Beetle lol

When I was in RAU in 1989 I didn't have a driver's license as I only turned 18 during my first semester exams. That holiday I worked every day and eventually got my license in November of that year. I used to take a train from Kempton and bus from Park station to get there. Had to start working the next year as my parents couldn't afford it despite the fact that I had a bursary.
Among my friends group the nicest car was an Opel Monza Cabriolet. The rest (of the top of my head) were a rwd Mazda 323, Fiat 124, Old Corolla etc.

I think it's a case of you only noticing the cars that stand out. When I was in NY, I thought is was amazing that all the women were amazingly hot. Until I realized that it couldn't be, so I stopped and looked at each one individually and realised I just didn't notice the rest between the few hot women there were.

Anyway, I studied in potch in 1999 till 2004, and the very lucky ones had a late model Polo. I had a bicycle that I got when I was 13. My friends had a VW beetle (originals), 80's Mazda 323 and an early 80s Merc. The rest walked or rode bicycle like me.
Even the idea of someone having a car and then getting a different car while studying is ludicrous to me.

My friend's cousin apparently got a new Merc A class when he went to varsity, and when he complained it wasn't cool enough he got a new Mini Cooper, so yes, you have those as well. They are just in the minority.

You also had those parents who bought a flat for their kids, where I didn't know anyone who didn't have anything more than a rented room in a commune.

Fairly young but I remember being laughed at with my 98 golf chico 1.3. Had one friend who believed in me at least hahahaha.

So glad that most of us are just like me, drive a cheapie to varsity.
Haha, or the silent ones are still lurking around and probably laughing at us

I lived on res and didn't have a car.
I was a Subaru fanatic since grade 7, thinking that I am going to make it my work to own one... I still can't afford it.
First year at varsity and I saw a first year driving around in a WRX STI.... I mean... come on...

I attended varsity to one day own this car, and this first year bastard just cruises by...

Really can't recall exactly, we're talking 30+ years ago, but loads of VW Beetles, entry level or old/banged up Fords, Golfs, Toyota's...

I got my first car when I graduated from UCT in '87.... red Golf convertible courtesy of my father.

I walked, bussed and hitched up that point to get anywhere. Different world, different era.

I was at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University from 2009 to 2014 and drove a 2000 Fiat Palio. I was just happy to have a car. Kids should start out driving crappy cars for the inevitable bumps and scrapes.

Agreed, all kids should get a crappy old slow but safe car to start with. Then when they get a real job and start earning they can go buy the car that they want. That is called motivation. ;)

agreed, but some parents aren't that wise.

would rather get their kids a lambo and starve at home just to get the right look.

Nah always had folk with the fancy cars. I reckon these days you've got more options in the 2nd hand market for kids - before you could basically have a Tazz, Golf, Uno or Midge.

The safety aspect does make me think. My friends and I used to joke about being the crumple zones in our own cars but if I have kids I would want them in a car with more safety features.

Get them an used Volvo like the V40, so it should be safe and wont cost you much...
I am certain that I wont give them a Datsun Go, that's for sure

The first year I had to walk or bum a lift from only a few available cars in the dorm. Going to movies was by foot, fortunately the streets of PTA were safe those days (1969-73). Next I got an old 175cc bike and used it for another two years.
The car that followed was a old VW Type 3 Sedan which cost me R400 and was bought with a loan from my father which I had to pay back with tips earned as waiter.
So nothing fancy those days.

sure the experience made you a humble person later on, when you EARNED a nicer car.
nothing wrong with that, something I think all kids should get,

makes them remember the pain of having to push start a mazda 323.
