All,

I just remembered that when I was at UCT in 2004 till 2008, I was driving my VW Jetta 3 and later on an Opel Astra on my 4th Year.
A recent visit back to UCT, I have seen SLK, Audi S3, etc on campus P6 parking...

I thought the economy is not doing well, so how do some of these students (or their parents) be able to afford these cars?

Also in 2011, at Potch when I was doing my Master, students were driving Freelanders, Rav4, etc, too. But I was told Potch student's parents are generally very well off.

What do you guys remember when you were in varsity?

Wide variety of vehicles...

I was driving an Uno when I started varsity, then a shytty golof, then a BMW.... but they were all worth about the same at the end of the day just different ages.

In terms of what was in the parking lot, everything from proper bangers to a few Porsches and such...

There have always been rich and there have always been poor.

This will be the case going forward as well.

At the time you probably just didn’t care to pay attention to such things.

I studied 1998-2000 at Cape Technikon

I drove a 1200 datsun bakkie and sometimes a conquest, depending what wasnt being used by my folks. Most of the time I took a train. Cars in general were fairly humble when I was studying.

On average I think UCT students drove better cars than us pleb Technikon students.

As someone who was in varsity just recently (2017), I can attest to this sentiment. On campus, I have seen a Mustang GT 5.0, a BMW F10 M5, a Porsche 911, a few Focus RS and STs, an RS3, GTI's galore, high-end Wildtracks and Hilux bakkies, a few G-Wagons, and quite a few M3s and C63s - all driven by students. I do believe that the bulk of those cars are owned by their parents though.

At UCT? 911 and G-Wagons? I still remembered in my time, a guy drove a SEAT Leon Cupra in Black, that thing was the superstar in our parking lot:unsure:

Oh no no. Not UCT, I didn't study there. Should have mentioned that in the first place. I meant North-West University and the few times I had been at Wits.

again, just because you see somebody driving a flashy car,
doesn't mean they own it and secondly they are doing particularly well.

Saffers love keeping up with the Joneses, and will sign away their salaries in an instant to get the right look.

As much as this might be true, I do not think people driving cars in the upper end of the market are chasing the Jones', what's the chance of someone rolling in a 911 and not affording it? And mind you these are driven by kids in the context of this thread, so I do not think affordability is an issue here.

you obviously haven't seen some of the people who spend literally every cent they earn paying back debt, from buying a flashy car.
and then rest of the month live on credit cards and eat ramen all day.

Agreed, kids in varsity is not like colleagues or neighbours, as you said highly likely they dont own those cars. Hence, affordability isnt withthem, more like their parents, or sugardaddy ;)

Sounds like what I would see at Monash when I was dropping off the SO who was studding at the time. There where also ample Porsches and one Aston Martin. One of her class mates went from a Yaris in 1st year, Toyota 86 end of second year and Ford Mustang before graduation.

Ford Fairmont - similar to this one

This is South Africa people... Cars are status symbols... They will eat dry bread, or 2 minute noodles, for years, while they spend every cent of their salary paying off that luxury sedan.
It was like that in the 80s already... Remember the Ford Cortina in the driveway, all polished and shiny to the nines while the house was falling apart?

You are really generalising hey

Isn't 'varsity a rather old fashioned tag?
Today I hear students refer to "uni".

i used to car pool with a friend in an old 1300 escort. on the downhills we would coast so the engine could cool down. was also a time where everyone gave a R10 for petrol. i feel really old now
