When will 384 / 512 be upgraded ?

512 approx R330, 4mb R413 - total R83 difference.
its si[mple maths

& im refering to the line speed not the isp package

My answer to the thread title:

I have a t-shirt that reads "How does never sound?"

That's pretty much Telkom's attitude to that question.

4mbit line without a 4mbit account helps how exactly?

Thanks for playing.

That's quite helpful. Typically ADSL is a total cost which includes paying money to some kind of ISP. So making a comment like "costs R90 more" is pointless.

Oh and yes, I can do si[mple maths.

the whole point of a break down is isp package ok fine lets get technical then.
512k line R330 + uncapped 899 = whatever
4mb line R413 + uncapped account 899 = whatever

total difference ffs R83 rands!!!!

why cant u just read between the lines & figure it out yourself!!

u would rather pay what 400 for 150gigs or 899 for 800gigs?
i would rather pay the 899. for 384 uncapped on a 4mb/10mb line, getting 4/10mb speeds

I'm not following. Are you saying that you have a 384kbps account from an ISP running on 4/10mbps line and getting 4/10mbps speeds?

yup, well thats the way its advertised, its called uncapped express or uncapped express+ from axxess, webafrica.. etc.. never just get a package from one isp, i got my line from telkom cos thats the only person i could at the time.. then i got my bandwith from someone else.. & i rather get the cream of the crop than something thats heavily shaped 24/7

Fair enough but those ISPs have some of the most complicated FUPs ever invented. I mean 10 day thresholds, consistently throttling 20% and even 50% of their user base, madness.

I still think that the comment about only having to pay R90 extra for a 4mbps line was a little ambiguous seeing as you do in effect have to pay more to have an ISP account that is capable of doing such speeds (in comparison to a "standard" 384kbps "uncapped" account).

Edit: The cheapest Express+ account from Axxess is R899, "slightly" more than a typical 384k account but with the obvious benefit of increased after-hours speeds, which cost you only R261 (from 384kbps to 4mbps) more ;)

yup thats the one.. ok so there's quite a jump from 384 to 4mb.. but its definatly worth it.. put it this way.. i'm averaging 1hour for 1.56gigs

The lines will be upgraded when you decide to stop smoking or cut back on drinking and take the plunge into 4mbit.
It doesnt cost that much more

Yea sure, of course it would help if all exchanges supported at least 4mb.

Whassup, can anyone confirm the claims made on the telkom sa/ wikipedia site en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telkom_SA ...apparently 384KB -> 512KB; 512KB -> 1MBps... thanks And God Bless

Note the 'citation needed' part right next to that claim.

They do... at DSLAM level. It what happens afterwards that causes the problems.

..not enough backhaul the local loop can currently handle.
anyway back to topic, as for ADSL; i remember when the slowest speed was 198 kilobit. so it will happen when it happens..
now if there's any truth to that wikIpedia article, we must keep in mind that the internet is full of lies

you'd still R29 per gig with afrihost for instance.

Considering we are talking about uncapped that is entirely irrelevant.

And with a cheap 384 uncapped account you can use more traffic than the equivalent ~7gb you can buy for the same price that way.
