When will Telkom actually shutdown ADSL and what are the best options, Fibre or LTE and is Telkom the best/cheapest ISP

Cool Ideas is by far the best ISP. I wouldn't get Telkom fibre if they were the only ones in my area.

In my area only two fibre choices Telkom or Herotel

Technically Telkom is just one of many ISP's that run over Openserve's network. Telkom itself doesn't provide the underlying fibre infrastructure, Openserve does. So you actually have a much wider choice of ISP's than you think. Pretty much every ISP in the country is available over Openserve's network.

Wait... Is DSL still a thing? I got an email from Telkom 2.5 years ago that DSL would be canceled in town and that we'd need to move to their mobile packages. Epic fail from a company that knows jacks**t about coverage. Luckily Herotel came to the rescue

DSL in Great Brak River has been offline for a week now and according to Openserve the lines are damaged and will not be replaced or repaired as they are decommissioning the copper network. Light at end of tunnel is that the sub contractor Openserve appointed in the area, are busy installing Openserve fiber and will soon be completed and live. Then we can move to fiber. Hopefully live soon as are stuck with no internet and no LTE coverage.

DSL is still a thing, but in areas where there's fibre, they don't fix faults anymore.

My line had noise a year or so ago and when I logged a fault, a technician came and installed fibre.

As I type this in first world Europe on a bonded VDSL connection..

I had an issue with my vdsl line 2 weeks ago and call telkom to report a fault. I was promptly informed by the Telkom representative that Telkom will be discontinuing copper lines from the 31st of March 2023”

They actually did not even want to log a fault for an openserve tech to come and investigate because of this.

I think it is crazy how they just want cut people off that is on copper without first replacing it with fibre. LTE/5G is not an option for me.

"From" - means they'll only start then.
We'll stick with it as long as possible, but can say with certainty that they stopped protecting their copper lines from lightning etc. months back.

Our knowledge of LTE says it's not good enough in some suburbs. Perhaps useful if there's some mobility need in the area. Will probably go for Vumatel fibre when the time comes, don't need much bandwidth.

They keep on fooling people with that lie ... and then people move over to their LTE products.

Obviously moving from ADSL/VDSL over to Fiber is probably worthwhile in most circumstances.

Indeed, and it can still be ordered as a brand new service - see here:

One thing Telkom did about a month ago that's not very promising - some of us who have had 4Mb/s actually delivering 5Mb/s had that cut down to the true 4Mb/s. Port resets etc. don't help it.
