@Randhir - Staphylococcus,Streptococcus,Salmonella,Escherichia coli. But enjoy.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You honestly think you'll contract salmonella by shaking someone's hand?

You do know that people can carry bacteria on their skin right? And if the person was in contact with it your chances are higher. Go educate yourself a bit.

Person-to-person transmission of salmonella occurs when an infected person's feces, unwashed from his or her hands, contaminates food during preparation or comes into direct contact with another person.

That would be do :p

Good hygiene is important. Regular washing of hands is important. So is good social graces and common courtesy and respect.

Unless someone is offering you a bloody stump where a hand should be, shake it like a nice person and wash your hand(s) when you have the chance.

You'd only be at any significant risk of infection if you then proceed to scratch your eyes, rub your nose or otherwise lick your hands after.

What situation? Shaking a hand?

You must have difficulties during job interviews - or do you make exceptions?

@ the topic "on hand" - I tend to do the slide-and-clicky-thingy too. Most people know that one.

I do the clicky thing

Whahaha the clicky thing. I get embarrassed while doing it

When you shake and the kinda slide off and hold fingertips and then put thumbs together and click. :D
I learn`t a clicky thing from all the durbanites down here.
Its just like the 'african' 3 step thing except in the middle you click your index and thumb to make the sound.

I really like the 3 step thing, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...oh wait I`m already warm, infact burning hot :D
Is it a south african thing? or african in general?

... that's of course if you are white ... does it always involve that 3x hand grasping gesture?

I always feel awkward if they go "all the way" and I seemingly then "abort" the courtesy half-way through the greeting, because I'm use to only clutching the other person's hand once.

The "modern African handshake" is used to indicated cross-cultural friendliness.

[EDIT]
I just remembered that virtual handshake that they did in the movie Demolition Man where they lifted their hand, palm facing to wards the person and made a circle motion. Wish I could find a .gif of that!

[EDIT 2]
Found one!

Fist-bump ftw!
If only it were acceptable in all circumstances...

(in that Demolition Man gif it looks like the dude on the right didn’t quite learn his move properly)

Lol. So, like one in a million for contracting a salmonella infection from shaking someones hand? Your average salmonella infection manifests as a minor case of diarrhea. Seriously, cutting yourself off from normal human interaction such as shaking hands out of fear of contracting an infection is a little mental.

Can we please leave the germs out of this thread and get back to the topic at hand (no pun intended ... or maybe it is :D).

It confuses the hell the out of me as I don't know how it's supposed to be done and leaves me feeling embarrassed - didn't even know it was a "3 part" handshake, please explain

I can totally relate to the OP. The worst is when some people in a group does a normal handshake and others go for the 3 part shake thing, I end up doing a 3-part shake with someone that doesn't do it back
