where can i download ps3 update?

If you connect the PS3 to your router won't it choose the best version to download? ;)

Version 1.6 is version 1.6, I dont think there is a different one for Europe and the US/Japan. I downloaded and installed V 1.6 on the 23rd from the playstation website and it is working fine. Backward compatibility with FFXII and RE4 no problem.

If the US version runs old PS2 games and the Euro/SA one does not, then surely there would be a separate firmware?

(Not an expert myself)

thats my point... i thought the PAL ps3 needs to have added support by the update as it doesn't have the emotion drive/chip in it. the US version has the same chip as the ps2 which makes it run those games, and the PAL(europe, australia, and south africa) ps3's don't have those chips, thus the soft ware is what supports the ps3.

but thats just my understanding

Yes well thats what I thought might be the case when I wanted to download it. But I'm shure they have programmed it to recognise the version of console you have and work accordingly. Thats just my guess of course but I am running v1.6 and it is working perfectly, both RE4 and FFXII would not work with v1.5 but are working now after the update, and I have Folding @ Home as well.

If you don't have broadband just head to ur local BTgames, they usually have firmware updates. Thats how i got ver1.6

ver1.6 is only a start in the deployment of additional features. You only have to look at how far the PSP has gone from original 1.5 to 3.11, to realise the magnitude of what firmware upgrades can achieve.

You must also have a look at the PS3 store... there are nice game demos that you can download and play. Oh yes the online gaming is free on the PS3 and not on the Xbox.
